Bullington 1 Annotated Bibliography Shaffer, Peter. Amadeus: a drama. New York. Samuel French, Ltd. 1981. Print.

This full length play is a fictionalized account of the rivalry between Antonio Saleiri and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. His use of symbols include music, Mozart, and women. Mozart was extremely popular and ran for over one thousand performances, won the Evening Standard Drama Award and the Theatre Critics Award for the London production, and won the 1981 Tony Award for "Best Play." I thought the story was very good, but Mozart cursed a little too much for my liking. ---. Black Comedy. New York. Samuel French. 1966. Print. This two act play is the story of a psychiatrist who tries to counsel a young man who stabbed a group of horses in the eyes because of a deranged ideal about sex and religion which had him both worshipping a horse, named Equus, and being sexually attracted to the horse. Shaffers symbols include the boy (representing peoples longing for true religion), the boys parents (representing the negative influences of society), and the horse (representing the worldly focuses of worship). This play was reflective of the risque

A customer review from Amazon.com said this about Shrivings: For the most part I appreciated Shrivings as a cultural, inter-generational, ideological sparing match, and see

Bullington 3 it's very strengths as being it's own weaknesses. Gideon, the patriarch of the piece is a Peace Loving man, a famous author, he's been knighted and is nationally regarded as a politically outspoken liberal. He lives secluded at Shrivings, a hotel like home for any curious vagabond to stay, the only need being a commitment to humanism, peacefulness and hope. With him is David Askelon a twenty-something dropout. David's father Mark was once Gideon's star pupil, also a renowned author, he's to be arriving at Shrivings, the two men honorees of some literary/national prize. Finally there is Lois, a young American who serves as Gideon's secretary and maid, a disciple like David, she's disillusioned by the American Left's deterioration and violence. The set-up is there, and quickly clear, for a ten or twelve rounder, and as it happens, no one gets out unscathed. Without delving into the goings-on, suffice to say this is a pseudo-familial excorcism, the damning of pessimism or optimism, the hawk versus the dove, the violent animal versus the spiritually risen soul, pupil versus master, what/who is a father, etc. Is there a rationalizing away of any slight, any betrayal, can the intellect ever eclipse the heart or the loins? While Shrivings symbols are clear, it's merging of them with the family seems too simplified. Allowing each character to flesh out there demons is catharsis, that being elemental to all theatre, but proves only that they're more complicated than we thought they were. The value gained from the domestic struggles against Vietnam and post-WWII cultural upheavals isn't in the hypocrisy of the aging Left-if not in the success of the struggle itself, but in the evolution of the spirit of the movement, blossoming and dying, blossoming and dying to this day. ---. White Lies. New York. Samuel French, Ltd. 1968. Print.

Bullington 4 A Goodreads.com user reviewed the play as White Liars, the story of a complicated love triangle and a depressed fortune teller, is interesting and well-paced but not worth 5 stars on its own. ---. Yonadab. No city. Harpercollins. 1992. Print. A New York Times review summarized the plot: According to the Book of Samuel, Yonadab was a ''very subtle man.'' As elaborated by Shaffer, and played by Alan Bates from behind a bright blue beard, he's stranger and more sinister than that. Not only does he incite David's son Amnon to rape his half-sister Tamar, as in the Bible; he does his best to organize her seduction by her brother Absalom, to whom she's fled for protection; and his motives in all this are decidedly peculiar, a mix of malice, sexual perversity and something altogether more highfalutin. Beneath the cynic and wily manipulator, one can clearly see a spiritual buccaneer, a philosophical desperado, obsessively embattled with a God he intellectually rejects. Yonadab even admits to half-believing the argument he puts to both Amnon and Absalom, that incest will rapturously transform them and Tamar into Jewish counterparts of the Egyptian Osiris and Isis: new, gentler versions of the kind of sibling deities whom Jehovah has grimly supplanted. The review stated that the plot was ridiculous and not favorable about the performance. ---. The Public Eye. New York. Samuel French, Ltd. 1962. Print.
