Is a province in the Philippines situated in the Ilocos Region occupying the northwestern
section of Luzon.
The name La Union indicates the union of towns from different provinces.

HISTORY
San Fernando was founded on May 6, 1786 and was named after Saint Ferdinand III of
Castile.
It was formerly called “Pindangan”. It was formed in 1759.
It became the cabecera or provincial capital of La Union province in 1850.
In the 2nd World War, last battle of San Fernando was fought during the Japanese
occupation at Barangay Bacsil.
The town was liberated in 1945.
On February 13, 1998, R.A 8509, authored by Victor F. Ortega converted the
municipality into a component city of La Union.

FESTIVALS
Pindangan Festival, La Union - it is celebrated on the 20th of March every year. In the
city of San Fernando, the annual street dance involving citizens and children from
different schools and barangays is already a part of the huge celebration every March.
Dinengdeng Festival, La Union - it is the official festive event of the municipality of Agoo,
La Union. Celebrated on the 1st day of May every year.
PANGASINAN
The term PangASINan means “land of salt” or “place where salt is made” from the root
word asin meaning salt in native language. The term was derived from one of the main
occupations of the people in the coastal villages which was, and still is, that making of
salt from seawater through the process of solar evaporation. It’s capital is the
municipality of Lingayen.

PEOPLE, CULTURE & THE ARTS
About half the people of Pangasinan are Pangasinenses, a distinct ethnolinguistic group
found along the central coast and interior plains of the province.
The rest of the province’s people are descendants of Ilocano migrants who settled the
eastern and western parts of Pangasinan. In the vicinity of Bolinao, about 30,000 people
speak SambalBolinao.
The Pangasinenses are also noted for their industry and enterprise such as, Buri hat
making, mat weaving, wooden shoe manufacturer, brick and pottery making, metal craft,
bakeshops, soap and candle-making, and the manufacturer of shoes and slippers are
centered in the town.
Pangasinenses also engage in trade, investing in expensive shawls, blankets, white and
blue cloth, needles, scissors, and mirrors from China as well as other products which
they bring to nearby northern provinces. The ubiquitous cattle-drawn wagons that travel
across northern Luzon and Manila are from Pangasinan.

FESTIVALS
Puto Festival - Calasiao celebrates a puto industry festival. Celebrated every 28th and
29th day of June, the fiest day of San Pedro and San Pablo, which were the dates of the
Calasiao Fiesta.
Bangus Festival - is a yearly cultural and food festival in Dagupan City in the province of
Pangasinan, held every 30th of April.
