1 Objectives
The objective of this document is to establish a standardized naming sequence for
engineering drawings created by the company. A consistent and well-defined naming
sequence is crucial for effective document management, organization, and collaboration
within engineering and construction projects. This document aims to provide a clear
explanation of the sequential naming sequence to be followed, ensuring that project team
members can easily identify, locate, and interpret drawings throughout the project lifecycle.

By adhering to this naming sequence, the following objectives can be achieved:

 Clarity: The naming sequence provides a clear and structured format that helps
project team members quickly understand the purpose, discipline, series, and type of a
drawing.
 Organization: Consistent naming enables efficient organization and categorization of
engineering drawings, making it easier to locate and retrieve specific documents when
needed.
 Collaboration: A standardized naming sequence enhances collaboration among
team members, as it ensures a shared understanding of document types, revisions, and
statuses.
 Revision Control: The inclusion of revision codes allows for easy identification and
tracking of different versions of a drawing, ensuring that the most up-to-date information is
used.
 Project Differentiation: The project number in the naming sequence distinguishes
drawings from different projects, reducing the risk of confusion or mix-ups.

The subsequent sections will provide a detailed explanation of each element in the
naming sequence, allowing for a comprehensive understanding and successful
implementation within your project.

2 Definitions
The structure of the naming sequence consists of project identification through a unique
project number, followed by the document type, discipline, series, type, unique number, and
revision.

2.1 Project Number

The project number serves as a unique identifier for each project. It follows the format
"P" followed by a numerical value (e.g., P21008). This number helps differentiate drawings
from different projects, ensuring clarity and organization.

2.2 Document ID

The document type identifies the purpose or nature of the drawing. It is represented
by a two-letter code from the following list:

• SK Sketch
• D Drawing
• TW Temporary Works

The document type identifies the purpose or nature of the drawing. For sketches (SK), a
simplified approach is followed in the naming sequence. Only the initials "SK" are used,
followed by the unique number (2.6). This streamlined naming convention ensures clarity and
efficiency when identifying and categorizing sketches within the project documentation.

2.3 Discipline

The discipline represents the specific area or field to which the drawing relates. It is
indicated by a single numerical digit, ranging from 0 to 8, corresponding to the following
disciplines:

• 0 General
• 1 Survey
• 2 Architectural
• 3 Building
• 4 Landside Civil
• 5 Waterside Civil
• 6 Mechanical/Electrical
• 7 Environmental Management
• 8 Health and Safety

2.4 Series

The series refers to the stage or phase of the project. It is denoted by a single
numerical digit from 0 to 3, representing the following categories:

• 0 Existing
• 1 Preliminary Design & Planning
• 2 Proposed Works
• 3 Construction Phasing/Temporary Arrangement

2.5 Type

The type represents the general classification of the drawing. It is indicated by a single
numerical digit from 0 to 2, corresponding to the following types:

• 0 General
• 1 Plans
• 2 Sections
• 3 Reinforcement

2.6 Unique Number

This is a single numerical digit ranging from 0 to 9, providing a unique identifier within
a specific combination of project number, document type, discipline, series, and type.

2.7 Revision

The revision denotes the version or status of the drawing. It is represented by a single
uppercase letter from the following options:

• I Information Only
• D Design Issue
• C Issue for Construction
• Z As-Built

3 Naming Sequence File

The Naming Sequence file serves as a vital tool for centralized document control and
efficient naming sequence assembly. This document acts as a comprehensive repository
where all project-related documents are managed, tracked, and organized. By utilizing this
Naming Sequence file, project teams can effectively control and monitor the creation,
revision, and status of engineering drawings. Additionally, it serves as a convenient platform
for assembling the standardized naming sequence, ensuring consistency and accuracy
across all document names. The Naming Sequence file should be included in the project
folder and diligently maintained by team members responsible for document management.
Adopting this centralized approach streamlines document control processes and facilitates
seamless collaboration among project stakeholders throughout the entire project lifecycle.
