Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Movie vs.

Book
The Harry Potter series has been a great success. They became one the most popular fiction series in the twentieth century and all-time classics. All seven of the books have been made into movies and screened in theatres around the world. Many film viewers, however, argue that Harry Potter movies have failed to do justice to the books, have changed many interesting dialogues and have rearranged many classic scenes, and therefore that they are not worth watching. In my opinion, the Harry Potter movies are very different from the books. And this is as true for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as it is for other books. Other than the fact that the movie is loosely based on the book, I find no connection between them. After reading the book and watching the movie, I noticed a very significant difference between the way these two media present the story. The book, which was written by British author J.K.Rowling in 2000, has a remarkable amount of detail in many interesting and classic scenes. On the other hand, the movie, which was directed by Mike Newell in 2005, is a condensed version of the original novel. Many scenes have either been removed or have been dramatically shortened. Take the Quidditch World Cup scene as an example. J.K. Rowling spent an entire chapter describing the final game. From the book I can vividly picture the stadium, the cheering crowds and the competitive game. However, this scene was not filmed in the movie at all. Newell skipped from Cornelius Oswald Fudge's (the Prime Minister of Magic) introduction of the opening of the game to the end where the Weasley family is celebrating Ireland's victory. When I read the novel, I was looking forward to seeing this scene in the film; however, it was not included in the movie. The reason why I think the scene of the final game was not included in the movie is probably because of time factors. The original book is 636 pages long, Rowling had a lot of space to include interesting descriptions and details. Harry Potter, the protagonist, was not involved in the final game; he was just an audience member. Therefore, the Quidditch scene is not important to the main plot. Since the movie is only two and half hours long, the director had to cut out scenes that were less important to the plot. It is odd considering that the director cut out the Quidditch World Cup final because of time considerations, but he added many scenes that are not in the book. Take the first challenge of the Triwizard Tournament as an example. In the book, Harry fought the Horntail dragon on his broomstick without exiting the arena. However, in the movie, Harry flies around the school with the angry dragon behind trying to kill him. This scene is completely visualized and made-up by the director, since it is nowhere in the book. It annoyed me to see a scene that is not in the book included in the film. Newell might have made the above decision because he felt that an action scene was needed at this particular time in the movie. At the beginning of the film, when the Quidditch World Cup occurred, audiences were still excited and willing to discover the movie, therefore, they did not need an action scene to wake them up. However, audiences might be falling asleep when the movie reached the part about the Triwizard Tournament. Although there are big differences between the book and the movie of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, I still enjoyed both of them. It is hard to decide which is better; they just have different requirements. The book has the requirement of including descriptive details that allow the readers to picture a vivid image. The author may spend pages describing scenes which the movie can present in an

instant using a picture. The movie, on the other hand, is at a disadvantage because it has to condense the dialogue and action of a 636 page book into a two-and-half-hour film. Over all, watching the movie is a better form of social entertainment because I can do it with my friends, whereas reading the book is something I would like to do by myself and take my time enjoying all the details.

Part 1 : Summer break, Quidditch World Cup (Chapter 1 9 p129) 1. Harry's scar hurt during a morning, he was going to write to Professor Dumbledore, but later decided not to because Harry felt that these words sounded stupid. Why did Harry feel this way? The last time the scar hurt, Voldemort was very close to him. In today's case Voldemort was obviously not anywhere near Harry. Harry felt that it was unnecessary to bug Dumbledore on this kind of minor problems. 2. Frank the door keeper, was confused when he heard the words muggle and Minister of Magic. Why was he confused? These two words only applied to the magic world. Muggle refers people who do not have the power to use magic. Minister of Magic was the official government in the magical world. Why did Uncle Vernon, who hated anything that has a connection to the magic world, ask Harry what is Quidditch ? (he should already know from the name that it is a magical name). Veela might be a big part of Bulgarians culture, therefore, the ministry had no choice but to let Bulgarians use Veela as their team Mascots. Veela would also bring fame and spirit to the World Cup. 8. Describe what will happen if Uncle Vernon denied Mrs.Weasley's invitation. If Uncle Vernon denied Mrs.Weasley's invitation, Mr. Weasley would still come and pick up

Harry. The Quidditch World Cup is something that Harry should not miss. Part 2: Back at Hogwart (Chapter 10 16 p238) 1. Why didn't Professor McGonnaGall report this incident to Dumbledore? Professor McGonnaGall did not like Malfoy. She could have saw what Malfoy was going to do and agreed at what Moody did. However, she couldn't show support toward Moody due to the school's policy. But she would not report Moody to Dumbledore. 4. According to the law, whoever that used the unforgivable curses will face a life-time sentence in Azkaban. However, Mad Eye used all of these curses in his class, why didn't he get into trouble? Dumbledore might have granted him permission to show these curses in class. 5. Give a few examples of the unforgivable curses. Avada Kedavra killing curse, Crucio torturing curse, Imperio Taking control of the victims. 6. Describe what will happen if Dumbledore didn't put an age barrier around the Goblet of Fire. If Dumbledore did not put an age barrier around the Goblet of Fire, then everybody with the nerve would put their names into the cup. Champions were so attractive to students that everyone was willing to risk their lives in order to win. Part 3 : The 4th Championn, the 1st task (Chapter 17-25 p398) 1. Harry, who was not 17, was selected into which event? Why did Dumbledore let him continue on? According to the rules who's name that was spitted out by the Goblet of Fire must continue on the competition. He can not choose to quit the competition or not attend it. There was nothing Dumbledore could do to stop Harry from entering the competition. 2. Why was Ron upset with Harry? Ron was upset with Harry because he felt that Harry was the one that got all the attentions and fame. He wanted more attentions and encourages. 3. Describe what would happen if Sirus didn't come to Hogwart. Nothing would change. In my opinion Sirus's appearance did not help Harry much. His advices were more like warnings.

4. Hogrid is a key keeper, he should not be able to know any of the top secret, but how did Hagrid find out about the dragon? What were the dragons used for? Charlie probably have told Hagrid about the dragons. Also, Hagrid was responsible for the field, there was no way that Dumbledore didn't tell him about the arrival of the dragons. These dragons were used during the first task. 5. What does S.P.E.W stands for? Who started this organization? Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare. Hermione started this organization. 6. She rejected Harry's invitation only because Cedric has invited him first. If Harry invited her first then she would have accepted Harry's invitation. 7. Who was Krum's partner for the dance? If Cedric did not use the Portkey then he would not have been killed. And Harry would still survive. 5. Voldmort relived with Harry's blood. Explain why he insisted on using Harry's blood. Harry was the one that caused Voldemort to loose all his power. He thought that by using Harry's blood Lily's spell could have been broken, and Voldemort could become even stronger. 6. In your understanding, explain why Voldmort was unable to kill Harry. In my opinion, Voldemort was unable to kill Harry because his wand had the same core as Harry's wind. The two winds refused to fight each other. 7. How did Dumbledore spot that May Eye Moody was not the real Moody? The Real Mad Eye Moody would not have brought Harry away from Dumbledore when Dumbledore needed Harry.
