1. INTRODUCTION
In order to promote the design of the proposed new construction of the of the of RCC (G+3)
Storied Residential Building of Sri. Chandan Dey Roy at Melaghar, Sepahijala Tripura, a subsoil
investigation work was planned by the authorities. With a view to design various foundation
structure under this project a thorough soil investigation was necessary. To complete this work
the service of SHREE RAM CONSULTANCY SERVICES was sought for.
The scope of the work consisted of making one boreholes of 1 50mm dia. and up to a
maximum depth of 18m. The scope of work also included conducting standard penetration
tests, collecting disturbed samples at regular intervals for identification and logging purposes,
collecting undisturbed tube samples at suitable intervals or at change of strata whichever is
earlier and testing these in laboratory.
This would also include the subsoil properties for each stratum so as to come up with the
design parameters for designing foundations, the depth of foundation. As the ground water
table location influences the bearing capacity of a foundation and the method of construction
of a foundation at the site, its location has also to be found.
Based on the above, this report presents the soil profile, laboratory and field test results. On
the basis of these results and their analysis thereof, the most suitable type of foundation is
suggested.

2. FIELD INVESTIGATIONS
2.1 GENERAL:
To design the foundation for these proposed structures to be constructed at this site,
Geotechnical Investigation was anticipated. The entire Investigation programme had been
divided mainly into two parts, 1) Field works & 2) Laboratory tests.
Field works unfold the characteristics of sub-surface deposits. The detail fieldwork of
site is presented in a tabular form below:
Water Level
BH Date of Date of
RL (m) Depth of BH Below
No. Commencement Completion
EGL (m)
1 100 18 13 22-04-2024 27-04-2024
2.2. BORING:
Boring was carried out by Shell and Auger method to sink nominal 150mm dia. bore holes to
depths using a mechanical winch. Undisturbed soil samples were collected at suitable intervals
or change of strata whichever is earlier by open drive sampling method (as per IS: 2132-1986,
reaffirmed- 1997).
2.3. SAMPLING:
The sampling equipment consists of a two-tier assembly of sample tubes 450 mm in length
fitted at its lower end, was driven by means of jarring link to its full length or as far down as
was found practicable. The ends of the tubes were sealed with wax and capped before sending
it to laboratory. Nominal 100 mm dia. undisturbed samples and at close intervals in depth
disturbed samples were collected. These were tagged and packed in polythene packets and
transported to the laboratory.

2.4. STANDERD PENETRATION TESTS:
In the bore hole at intervals of 1.5m or at change of strata (whichever is earlier) Standard
Penetration Tests were conducted. The split spoon sampler used in SPT is having an outer dia.
of 50.8 and inner dia. of 35mm, is driven with a monkey weighting 63.5kgs falling freely
through 75cms advances the spoon. Number of blows required to penetrate every 7.5cm to a
maximum depth of 45cm was recorded. The first 15cm of drive are considered to be seating
drive and are neglected. The total number of blows required for 7.5cm of penetration is
counted and termed as penetration resistance N". After the completion of the test, split spoon
sampler was opened and soil specimens were preserved in polythene bags for logging
purpose.
2.5 MEASUREMENT OF WATER TABLE:
Ground water level during the boring work and after 24 hours of removal casting was also
noted and shown in the profile.
3. LABORATORY TESTING
The following laboratory tests were performed on soil sample collected from the tentative
bore holes for identification, classification sub soil deposits and to determine their physical
and geotechnical properties
1. Grain Size Analysis.
2. Determination of Liquid Limit and Plastic Limit.
3. Determination of Natural Moisture Content.
4. Determination of Specific Gravity.
5. Determination of Bulk & Dry Unit Weight.
6. Direct Shear Test. (To determine shear strength)
7. One-Dimensional Consolidation Test (To determine settlement potentiality).

4. SUBSOIL CONDITIONAND PROPERTIES
4.1. SUB-SOIL CONDITION:
Topographically the bore hole is lying in a plain land of RL 100m. Soil profile were drawn on
the basis of analysis of soil samples obtained from borehole and presented in bore log. The
water table is situated at a shallow depth of 13m from effective ground level. The top portion
of soil strata is having a light yellow-ish brown coloured, moderate stiff and hard silty sandy
soil layer. A deep greyish brown coloured hard and stiff fine granular silty- sandy soil layer
found at a depth from 6m to the bottom most layer of the soil profile. The subsoils are of
moderate quality and characterized by soft clayey silt/ silty sand soil layer of medium
compressibility and plasticity followed by a moderately dense to dense fine silty sand layer.
The characteristics parameters of each individual strata as obtain from laboratory tests are also
presented. The results of SPT “N" values of each possible layer are also shown in the in
profile as well as presented in fig.
4.2. SUB-SOIL PROPERTIES:
The subsoils are of good quality. A light yellowish brown coloured moderate stiff and hard
silty-sandy soil layer of 3m from the top has been observed. Experimenting in laboratory with
the soil collected from the bore hole it has been observed that the soil profile is mostly
consists of a stiff and hard silty sandy soil at the top followed by a light greyish brown
coloured silty sandy soil layer mixed with laterite type soil layer was seen below a depth of
6m to the bottom most end of the existing soil profile. The soil below 6m from EGL is
cohesion less. The soil properties of each layer were determined in laboratory and presented in
here.

5. DISCUSSION AND CALCULATIONS
5.1. GENERAL BEARING CAPACITY CALCULATION:
5.1.1. Strength and deformation parameters:
For stratum - 1
Avg N = 48, estimated cohesion from "N" is 2 kg/sqcm
From, Direct Shear test results, avg C = 0.821 kg/sqcm & estimated Φ = 26°
In future water level may rise and the soil may get softened resulting to low shear
strength values. Considering this aspect, we reduce the C and values using standard practice
[Crevised= 0.67C & Φ = tan-1 (0.67tan Φ)]. Thus we have average Crevised(UC) 0.55kg/sqcm &
average Φrevised = 18.
Thus average C= 1.25kg/sqcm & average Φ= 80
Considering the above and to be in safer side, let us restrict the C to lkg/sqcm and ) Φ=80
The soil modulas Es-4.4N = 211.2
Undrained Young modulas Eu, =KxC= 600 x 1 =600 kg/sqcm
For stratum -2
The corrected average N= 86
And estimated C = 0.3Kg/sqem (From Direct Shear).
For normally consolidated sand, Es = 5(N+15) = 505
For over consolidated sand, Es = 400+10.5N = 1303
Poissions Ratio = 0.3
Frictional Angle = 300

5.1.2. Calculation of net safe bearing capacity:
Based on the corrected “N" value and strength properties evaluated from laboratory test, net
safe bearing capacities are calculated for a foundation depth of 1.5m, 2m, 2.5m using the
equation (Hansen 1970) as, recommended by IS (with Factor of Safety - 2.5). The ground
water table is taken as EGL.
Qns = C.Ne Se De + q.Nq.Sq.Dq + 0.5y B Ny. Sy. Dy .Rw
Where,
C=Cohession.
q=Overburden pressure.
Y= Bulk density.
Nc, Nq, Ny are the Bearing Capacity Factors.
B= Breath of foundation.
D= Depth factor.
5.1.3. Calculation of foundation settlement:
The foundation settlement is evaluated using IS:8009 (Part-l)-1976. Which states that,
Total settlement = Immediate Settlement + Consolidation Settlement. St= Si + Sc
The corrected total settlement = (Si + Sc) df x dr,
Immediate settlement, Si= (qB(1-2)I)/E.
Consolidation Settlement, Se = Ht(1+eo) Ce logıo(0+∆)/0.
Where,
Ht=Thickness of the compressible layer.
Cc = Compression Index
eo= initial void ratio.
0-initial overburden pressure
df= Depth Factor, dr = Rigidity Factor.
=0.5 (for clay).
I= Influence Factor (depends upon L/B ration of foundation.
