1. INTRODUCTION
A Proposed (G+3)storied Building at Mouza- Upar Orahar, J.L. No-10, R.S. &
L.R. Plot No.-407, R.S. Khatian No.-3214, L.R. Khatian No.-3254, P.O.-Sundarpur,
P.S.-Bhagabangola, Under Sundarpur Gram Panchayet, Dist.- Murshidabad.
The building will be of R.C.C. framed structure.
M/s. D.S. Construction, Jadavpur, Kol-78 was awarded the work to carry out a
foundation Investigation for the proposed building. Soil exploration including
field and laboratory tests were done in July, 2024 to ascertain the sub-soil
condition at the site.
The field work for soil exploration including all field tests were done by Madhab
Mallick and report made by M/s. D.S. Construction and the engineering properties
of the soil samples have been obtained from routine laboratory tests. This report
deals with the findings of field and laboratory investigation and makes
recommendation for the foundations that may be adopted for the building.
2. FIELD INVESTIGATION
Based on reconnaissance of the site, the depth and no. of bore holes were determined.
Each bore hole of 150 mm. dia, was advanced into the soil partly by means of Auger
with shell and partly by wash boring technique. Stabilisation of bore holes was
achieved by circulating bentonite slurry. Standing water level was measured in each
bore hole during boring and as well as 24 hours after completion of bore holes.
The ground water table was observed at a depth of 3.00m. below the E.G.L.
Standard penetration tests were conducted in each bore hole at suitable intervals of
depth using standard split spoon samplers as per IS 2131/1963. The nos. of blows
required to penetrate the sampler spoon for a depth of 15 to 45 cm. was recorded as
‘N’ values. Undisturbed soil samples were recovered mainly from cohesive deposits.
Sampling was done by driving two tier open drive samplers of diameter 100mm. and
length 450 mm. with area ratio not exceeding 15% . After withdrawal of the tubes,
they were properly sealed at both ends with wax and were transferred to the
laboratory . Disturbed samples were recovered from the auger and the barrel of the
split spoon samplers for identification of different strata of sub-soil.

3. LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS
In order to assess the different engineering properties of the sub – soil strata,
relevant laboratory tests were conducted on undisturbed/disturbed soil samples.
These tests include the followings :-
1. Natural Moisture Content.
2. Atterberg Limits ( LL. & PL. )
3. Hydrometer and Sieve Analysis.
4. Bulk Density ( wet & dry )
5. Specific Gravity.
6. Strength Tests(Uc).
7. Consolidation.
The results of these tests have been presented systematically in result sheets later
on.

4. SUB-SOIL CONDITIONS AND PROPERTIES
Sub-soil conditions as revealed from the 2 bore holes have been shown in the soil
profile. Immediately below G. L. there exists a layer of filled-up materials down
to a depth of 0.60m. below the E.G.L. The top layer is underlain by medium stiff
light brownish grey clayey silt / silty clay extending down to 5.00 m. below the E.G.L.
Moderate dense to dense light grey silty medium to coarse sand with mica traces and
rusty spots layer extends down to the termination depth of 20.60m. below the E.G.L.
The soil stratification appears to be more or less uniform over the entire area and the
sequence of stratification is summarised as shown below :-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STRATUM DESCRIPTION AVG. RANGE OF
THICKNESS(M) ‘N’ VALUE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Filled-up Very loose filling of brownish 0.60 -
materials. grey clayey silt with brick bats etc.
I Medium stiff light brownish grey 4.40 04 - 08
clayey silt / silty clay.
II Moderate dense to dense light More than 15.6 m. up 10 - 27
grey silty medium to coarse to maximum explored
with micatraces. depth of 20.60 m.

The average engineering properties of different strata related to the design of foundation
have been arrived from field and laboratory test data as given below :-

5. SHALLOW FOUNDATION AS RAFT WITH BASEMENT MAY BE
SUGGESTED FOR THE PROPOSED STRUCTURE.
The proposed construction would be a (G+3)storied building. The building is
proposed to be built with a 1.50m. deep Raft which would extend over an area
of 12.60m. x 41.66m.. The net safe bearing capacity of 12.60m. x 41.66m. Raft
with a 1.50m. deep Raft has been obtained on the basis of the soil data as follows :-
a) Net safe bearing capacity As per IS 1893 : 2016
qsafe = 1/ F x 5.14 C Sc dc
where, Sc = Safe factor
dc = Depth factor
F = Factor of safety
df = 1.50m.
Therefore,
qsafe = ( 1 / 2.5) x 5.14 x 3.0 x [ 1 + 0.2 x 12.60 / 41.66 ] [ 1 + 0.2 x 1.50 / 12.60]
= ( 1 / 2.5 ) x 5.14 x 3.0 x 1.060 x 1.024
= 6.69 t /m²
Allowable net safe bearing capacity = 6.7 t /m²
For the sub-soil condition the two necessary conditions are to be satisfied i.e. the soil
would not fail in shear and the settlement should be within the permissible limit.
Permissible of Raft settlement is 125 mm.

6. RECOMMENDATIONS
The proposed construction would be a (G+3)storied building. The building is
proposed to be built with a 1.50m. deep Raft which would extend over an area
of 12.60m. x 41.66m.. The net safe bearing capacity of 12.60m. x 41.66m. Raft
with a 1.50m. deep Raft has been obtained on the basis of the soil data as follows :-
a) Net safe bearing capacity As per IS 1893 : 2016
qsafe = 1/ F x 5.14 C Sc dc

F = Factor of safety
df = 1.50m.
Therefore,
qsafe = ( 1 / 2.5) x 5.14 x 3.0 x [ 1 + 0.2 x 12.60 / 41.66 ] [ 1 + 0.2 x 1.50 / 12.60]
= ( 1 / 2.5 ) x 5.14 x 3.0 x 1.060 x 1.024
= 6.69 t /m²
Allowable net safe bearing capacity = 6.7 t /m²
From the sub-soil condition , it is revealed that the top soil can not support the load
from the proposed structure. Shallow foundations may only be used after reinforcing
the top soil with Sal Ballah piles. These piles of 7″ diameter and of 5.0m. length
should be driven from a depth of 1.50m. below the E.G.L. The spacing of such piles
should be 0.5m. C/C. With such conditions, the following net safe bearing capacity
values may be used for routine design :-
Therefore,
qsafe = ( 1 / 2.5) x 5.14 x 3.6 x [ 1 + 0.2 x 12.60 / 41.66 ] [ 1 + 0.2 x 1.50 / 12.60]
= ( 1 / 2.5 ) x 5.14 x 3.6 x 1.060 x 1.024
= 8.03 t /m²
For the sub-soil condition the two necessary conditions are to be satisfied i.e. the soil
would not fail in shear and the settlement should be within the permissible limit.
Permissible of Raft settlement is 100 mm.
