LESSON: Understanding the Essay
Your Tool for Thinking, Expression, and Success in IGCSE English
Language B
What is an Essay, Really?
An essay is more than just a piece of writing. It’s a way of thinking on
paper.
It’s where you take an idea — maybe something you’ve observed,
questioned, or felt — and explore it with clarity, structure, and purpose.
Think of it like this: “An essay is a conversation between your mind and the
world — only written down.”
It’s your chance to show how you think, how you see things, and how well you
can communicate that to someone else.
