Computer Assisted Language Learning 1
Introduction
C.A.L.L. (COMPUTER ASSISTED LANGUAGE LEARNING)
Computer Assisted Language Learning is described by Michael Levy as "the search for and study of applications of the computer in language teaching and learning". (1)
When C.A.L.L originated in the 1960s, it was named C.A.L.I (Computer Assisted Language Instruction). which was more focused on instructing, rather than thinking from the students point of view of learning. Eventually, this changed around the 1980s when C.A.L.L became more student centered. With this change and with how accessible C.A.L.L based programs are now it has definitely become a lot easier for students to start learning on their own terms and without necessarily needing the help of a teacher.
Lately technological advances have looked to different resources and mediums that allow for innovating and optimizing the teaching-learning process for the mother tongue and as well for the foreign tongues. (2) The student teachers have made room for this electronic medium in their teaching methods and have adopted said style of teaching since it uses tools for teaching such as videos and other materials which are very useful for exploring and learning other languages. Also, since technology is in constant evolution and is constantly being updated, the quality of peoples intellectual levels is always improving.
Collaborative learning mediated by computers has contributed to bettering the students communicative abilities. (3) Computers have taken a significant place in the learning area, seeing as how one of the best teaching methods is through a medium that interests the students, and technology is definitely one of those media.
The Internets accessible resources can increment the variety and the diversity of the learning opportunities and the quality of the learning experience, adapting itself to the different learning styles of the students. (4) With computers the student teachers
can teach a language to kids through games and other activities, including electronic games.
The increase in the flow of information is associated with learning environments that are more autonomous every time (5) C.A.L.L is a tool and an autonomous way for learning which not only works for learning but also for teaching, plus its also useful for pronunciation, grammar, and writing for learning to speak English
