General Information
Kitchener Stitch This method of weaving with two needles is used for the toes of socks and flat seams. To weave the edges together and form an unbroken line of stockinette stitch, divide all stitches evenly onto two knitting needlesone behind the other. Thread yarn into tapestry needle. Hold needles with wrong sides together and work from right to left as follows: Step 1: Insert tapestry needle into first stitch on front needle as to purl. Draw yarn through stitch, leaving stitch on knitting needle. Step 2: Insert tapestry needle into the first stitch on the back needle as to purl. Draw yarn through stitch and slip stitch off knitting needle. Step 3: Insert tapestry needle into the next stitch on same (back) needle as to knit, leaving stitch on knitting needle. Step 4: Insert tapestry needle into the first stitch on the front needle as to knit. Draw yarn through stitch and slip stitch off knitting needle. Step 5: Insert tapestry needle into the next stitch on same (front) needle as to purl. Draw yarn through stitch, leaving stitch on knitting needle. Mattress Seam Stitch This type of seam may be used for vertical seams (like side seams). It is worked with the right sides of the pieces facing you, making it easier to match stitches for stripe patterns. It is worked between the first and second stitch at the edge of the piece and works best when the first stitch is a selvage stitch. To work this seam, thread a tapestry needle with matching yarn. Insert the needle into one corner of work from back to front, just above the cast-on stitch, leaving a 3-inch tail. Take the needle to edge of other piece and bring it from back to front at the corner of this piece. Return to the first piece and insert the needle from the right to wrong side where the thread comes out of the piece. Slip the needle upward under two horizontal threads and bring the needle through to the right side. Cross to the other side and repeat the same process, going down where you came out, under two threads and up. Continue working back and forth on the two pieces in the same manner for Photo A about an inch, and then gently pull on the thread, pulling the two pieces together (Photo A). Complete the seam and fasten off. Use the beginning tail to even up the lower edge by working a figure 8 between the cast-on stitches at the corners. Insert the threaded needle from front to back under both threads of the corner cast-on stitch on the edge opposite the tail, then into the same stitch on the first edge. Pull gently until the 8 fills the gap (Photo B).

Step 3

Step 4

Step 5

Repeat Steps 25 until one stitch is left on each needle. Then repeat Steps 2 and 4. Fasten off. Woven stitches should be the same size as adjacent knitted stitches.

When a project is made with a textured yarn that will not pull easily through the pieces, it is recommended that a smooth yarn of the same color be used to work the seam.

Pompoms Cut two cardboard circles in size specified in pattern. Cut a hole in the center of each circle, about 1/2 inch Fig. needle with a length in diameter. Thread a tapestry1 of yarn doubled. Holding both circles together, insert needle through center hole, over the outside edge, and through center again (Figure 1) until entire circle is covered and center hole is filled (thread more length of yarn as needed).

Twisted Cord Items sometimes require a cord as a drawstring closing or strap. The number of lengths and weight of the yarn determines the thickness of the cord. To form the cord, hold the number of strands of yarn indicated together matching the ends. Attach one end to a doorknob or hook. Twist the other end in one direction until the length is tightly twisted and begins to kink. Sometimes the lengths are folded in half before twisting. In this case the loose ends are attached to the doorknob and a pencil is slipped into the folded loop at the other end. Turn the pencil to twist the cord.

Fig. 3 FIGURE 1 Fig. 1

With sharp scissors, cut yarn between the two circles all around the circumference (Figure 2).

Once the cord is tightly twisted, continue to hold the twisted end while folding the yarn in the middle. Remove the end from the knob or hook, and match the two ends; then release them allowing the cord to twist on itself. Trim the cord ends to the desired length and knot each end. If the cord is woven through eyelets, it may be necessary to tie a second knot in the end to prevent it from slipping back through the eyelet opening. Knitting With Beads Threading beads onto yarn is the most common way to knit with beads. Step 1: Before beginning to knit, thread the beads onto your skein of yarn using a bead threader. As you work, unwind a small quantity of yarn, each time sliding the beads towards the ball until needed. Pass the yarn through the loop of the threader and pick up beads with the working end of the needle (Figure 4). Step 2: Slide the beads over the loop and onto the yarn (Figure 5).

FIGURE 2 Fig. 2 Fig. 3

Using two 12-inch strands of yarn, slip yarn between circles and overlap yarn ends two or three times Fig. 1 (Figure 3) to prevent knot from slipping, pull tightly and tie into a firm knot.

Fig. 2 FIGURE 3 Fig. 3

Remove cardboard and fluff out pompom by rolling it between your hands. Trim even with scissors; leave the tying ends for when attaching pompom to project.

Embroider y Stitches
Duplicate Stitch The duplicate stitch is an embroidery stitch that mimics the actual knitted stitches of a finished piece to add color and pattern to the surface. Avoid knots on the wrong side of your work by weaving in the tail. Step 1: Bring the threaded needle to the front of the work at the bottom V of a knit stitch. Step 2: Follow the path of that stitch by inserting the needle through the two legs of the stitch above. Step 3: Insert the needle back through the original point. Continue to repeat Steps 13, while referring to Photos C and D, in any direction you like, always following the path of the knitted stitches.
