DOM Assignment

The document outlines a set of questions related to the dynamics of machines, specifically focusing on the analysis of various cam profiles and their interactions with roller and flat-faced followers. It includes derivations for displacement, velocity, and acceleration, as well as calculations for principal dimensions, accelerations, and forces involved in different cam mechanisms. The questions cover both theoretical derivations and practical applications in mechanical engineering contexts.

Answer the following questions

1. Derive for: Tangent cam with roller follower

a) Expression for displacement, velocity and acceleration of follower when the roller is in contact with
straight flank.
b) Expression for displacement, velocity and acceleration of follower when the roller is in contact with the
nose.

2. For a symmetrical tangent cam operating a roller follower, the least radius of cam is 30 mm and roller
radius is 15 mm. The angle of ascent is 60°, the total lift is 15 mm and the speed of the cam shaft is 300
rpm. Calculate
i. Principal dimensions of cam [i.e., the distance between the cam centre and nose centre, nose
radius and angle of control of cam with straight flank].
ii. Acceleration of the follower at the beginning of the lift, where the roller just touches the nose
(i.e., flank merges into the nose) and at the apex of the circular nose. Assume that there is no
dwell between ascent and descent.

3. A cam has straight working surfaces which are tangential to the base circle of the cam. The follower is a
roller follower with line of stroke passing through the axis of the cam. The particulars are the following:
Base circle diameter = 100 mm; Roller diameter = 50 mm. The angle between the tangential faces of the
cam = 90°. The faces are joined by a nose circle of radius = 10 mm. The speed of rotation of cam = 180
rpm.
Determine the acceleration of the roller centre.
a) When the roller just leaves contact of the flank on its ascent
b) When the roller is at its outer end of its lift.

4. A tangent cam of base circle radius 30 mm operates a roller follower of diameter 20 mm. The line of
stroke of the roller follower is straight line passing through the axis of cam. The follower acts against a
spring of stiffness 10 N/mm and initial compression 10 mm. The effective mass of the follower 1 is 2 kg
and the spring mass is 1 kg. Assume 1/3 mass of spring as effective mass of the spring due to inertia
effects. The cam rotates at 50 rad/sec and the cam has turned by an angle 30° from the point at which
the roller makes contact with the flank. Neglecting the effect of friction, determine the torque exerted on
the cam shaft.

5. Derive for: Circular arc cam with flat faced follower

a) Expression for displacement, velocity and acceleration when the flat face of the follower has
contact on the circular flank.
b) Expression for displacement, velocity and acceleration when the flat face of the follower is in
contact with any point on the nose
6. In a four stroke petrol engine, the crank angle is 4º after t.d.c. when the suction valve opens and 50°
after b.d.c. when the suction valve closes. The lift is 10 mm, the nose radius is 2.5 mm and the least
radius of the cam 20 mm. The shaft rotates at 600 rpm. The cam is of the circular type with a circular
nose and flanks while the follower is flat faced. Determine the maximum velocity, maximum
acceleration and retardation of the valve. What is the minimum force exerted by the springs to
overcome the inertia of moving parts weighing 250 gm.

7. The following data relate to a symmetrical circular cam operating on a flat faced follower. Least radius
= 25 mm, nose radius = 8 mm, lift of the value = 10 mm, angle of action of cam = 120°. Cam shaft
speed = 1000 rpm. Determine (i) Flank radius (ii) Maximum velocity (iii) Maximum acceleration (iv)
Maximum retardation. If the mass of the follower and valve with which it is in contact is 4 kg, find the
minimum force exerted by the spring to overcome the inertia of the moving parts.

8. Following is the data for a circular arc cam working with a flat faced reciprocating follower : Minimum
radius of cam = 30 mm. Total angle of action = 120°: Radius of circular arc = 80 mm. Nose radius = 10
mm. (i) Find the distance of the centre of nose circle from the cam axis. (ii) Draw the profile of the cam
to full scale. (iii) Find the angle through which the cam turns when the point of contact moves from the
junction of minimum radius arc and circular arc to the junction of nose radius arc and circular arc. (iv)
Find the velocity and acceleration of the follower when the cam has turned through an angle of 0 = 20°.
The angle 0 is measured from the point where the follower just starts moving away from the cam. The
angular velocity of cam is 10 rad/sec. (v) Maximum Acceleration and retardation of the follower.

9. A symmetrical cam with convex flanks operating a flat faced follower has base circle diameter of 75
mm and nose radius of 10 mm. The lift of the follower is 20 mm. The cam is symmetrical and the total
angle of action is 120°. Determine (i) Principal dimensions of the cam. (ii) Acceleration of the follower
at the beginning of the lift, at the end of contact with the circular flank, at the beginning of contact with
nose and at the apex of the nose. Speed of cam shaft is 600 rpm.
