For class - c
Kinematics of Machines
ASSIGNMENT – (Cam & Cam-Profile)

Q-1 Answer the following Questions:

(a) Write short notes on cams and followers.

(b) Explain with sketches the different types of cams and followers.
(c) Why a roller follower is preferred to that of a knife edged follower?
(d) Define the following terms as applied to cam with a neat sketch:
1. Base circle,
2. Pitch circle,
3. Pressure angle and
4. Stroke of the follower.
(e) What are the different types of motion with which a follower can move? Explain all type
of motions with neat sketch.
(f) Explain all terms used in cam profile.

Q-2 Solve the following Examples:

Ex-1: A cam is to be designed for a knife edge follower with the following data:
1. Cam lift = 40 mm during 900 of cam rotation with SHM.
2. Dwell for the next 300.
3. During the next 600 of cam rotation, the follower returns to its original position with SHM.
4. Dwell during the remaining 1800.
During the profile of the cam when (a) the line of stroke of the follower passes through the
axis of the cam shaft and (b) the line of stroke is offset 20 mm from the axis of the cam shaft.
The radius of the base circle of the cam is 40 mm. Determine the max. Velocity & acceleration
of the follower during its ascent and descent, if the cam rotates at 240 r.p.m.

Ex-2: A cam with a minimum radius of 25 mm, rotating clockwise at a uniform speed is to be
designed to give a roller follower, at the end of a valve rod, motion described below:
1. To raise the valve through 50 mm during 1200 rotation of the cam;
2. To keep the valve fully raised through next 300;
3. To lower the value during next 600; and
4. To keep the value closed during rest of the revolution i.e. 1500;

The diameter of the roller is 20 mm and the diameter of the cam shaft is 25 mm.
Draw the profile of the cam when (a) the line of stroke of the value rod passes through the axis of
the cam shaft, and (b) the line of the stroke is offset 15 mm from the axis of the cam shaft.
The displacement of the valve; while being raised and lowered, is to take place with simple
harmonic motion. Determine the max. acceleration of the valve rod when the cam shaft rotates at
100 r.p.m. Draw the displacement, the velocity and the acceleration diagrams for one complete
revolution of the cam.

Ex-3: A cam drives a flat reciprocating follower in the following manner:

During first 1200 rotating of the cam, follower moves outwards through a distance of 20 mm
with SHM. The follower dwells during next 300 of cam rotation. During next 1200 of cam
rotation, the follower moves inwards with SHM. The follower dwells for the next 900 of cam
rotation. The min. radius of the cam is 25 mm. draw the profile of the cam.

Ex-4:draw the profile of cam when roller follower moves with cycloidal motion during out
stroke and return stroke as given bellow.
1. Out stroke with max. Displacement of 31.4 mm during 180 degree of cam rotation.
2. Return stroke for next 150 degree of cam rotation.
3. Dwell for remaining 30 degree of cam rotation.
The minimum radius of cam is 15 mm and roller diameter of follower is 10 mm. the axis
of roller follower is offset by 10 mm towards right from the axis of cam shaft.

Ex-5:Draw the profile of a cam operating a roller reciprocating follower and with the following
data: (a) Minimum radius of cam = 40 mm &(b) Lift = 30 mm & (c) Roller dia = 15 mm
The cam lifts the follower for 1200 with S.H.M. followed by a dwell period of 300. Then the
follower lowers down during 1500 of the cam rotation with uniform acceleration & retardation
followed by a dwell period. If the cam rotates at a uniform speed of 150 r.p.m. calculate the
maximum velocity & acceleration of the follower during the descent period. (Also draw the
Velocity & Acceleration diagrams).
