PART – A
(Compulsory Question)
*****
1 Answer the following: (10 X 02 = 20 Marks)
(a) Differentiate clearly screw and spherical pairs by giving examples.
(b) What is a pantograph? Mention few applications of pantograph mechanism.
(c) Give important applications of Double Hooke’s Joint.
(d) Explain the effect of centrifugal tension in the belt in power transmission of belt drive.
(e) How tangential and normal components of accelerations for point on a link can be determined.
(f) What do you mean by centroid of a body? What are its types?
(g) Make a comparison of cycloidal and involute tooth forms.
(h) What is a reverted gear train? Where is it used?
(i) Compare the performance of knife-edge, roller followers.
(j) Define trace point and pressure angle for cam mechanism.
PART – B
(Answer all five units, 5 X 10 = 50 Marks)
UNIT – I
2 Mention various inversions of a single slider-crank mechanism and explain any two of them giving
examples.
OR
3 Name exact straight line motion mechanisms and explain. Prove that the point on the link traces exact
straight line path for any one mechanism.
UNIT – II
4 (a) Distinguish the Davis and Ackerman’s steering gear mechanisms.
(b) Derive an expression for the ratio of angular velocities of the shafts of a Hooke’s joint.
OR
5 Two pulleys mounted on two parallel shafts that are 2 m apart are connected by a crossed belt drive. The
diameters of the two pulleys are 500 mm and 240 mm. Find the length of the belt and the angle of
contact between the belt and the each pulley. Also find the power transmitted if the larger pulley rotates
at 180 rpm and the maximum permissible tension in the belt is 900 N. The coefficient of friction between
the belt and the pulley is 0.28.
UNIT – III
6 In a four bar chain ABCD, AD is fixed and is 15 cm long. The crank AB is 4 cm long and rotates at
120 rpm clockwise, while the link CD (= 8 cm) oscillates about D. BC and AD all of equal length. Find the
angular velocity of link CD when angle BAD = 60 .
OR
7 In the mechanism shown in figure below, the crank OA makes 400 rpm in the counter clock wise
direction. Find: (i) Angular velocity of the link BA. (ii) Velocity of the slider at A. The lengths of the links
are OA = 60 mm, OB = 220 mm and BC = 300 mm.

UNIT – IV
8 Use the following data in drawing the profile of a cam in which a knife-edged follower is raised with
uniform acceleration and deceleration and is lowered with simple harmonic motion: Least radius of
cam = 60 mm, Lift of follower = 45 mm, Angle of ascent = 6 Angle of dwell between ascent and
descent = 40°, Angle of descent = 75°. If the cam rotates at 180 rpm, determine the maximum velocity
and acceleration during ascent and descent.
OR
9 Draw the profile of a cam operating a roller reciprocating follower having a lift of 35 mm. The line of
stroke of the follower passes through the axis of the camshaft. The radius of the roller is 10 mm and the
minimum radius of the cam is 40 mm. The cam rotates at 630 rpm counterclockwise. The follower is
raised with simple harmonic motion for 90° of the cam rotation, dwells for next 60° and then lowers with
uniform acceleration and deceleration for the next 150°. The follower dwells for the rest of the cam
rotation.
UNIT – V
10 (a) What is path of contact? Derive the relation for its magnitude.
(b) The number of teeth on the gear and the pinion of two spur gears in mesh are 30 and 18 respectively.
Both the gears have a module of 6 mm and a pressure angle of 20°. If the pinion rotates at 400 rpm,
what will be the sliding velocity at the moment the tip of the tooth of pinion has contact with the gear
flank? Take addendum equal to one module. Also, find the maximum velocity of sliding.
OR
11 Draw the profile of a cam operating a knife-edge follower (when the axis of the follower passes through
the axis of cam shaft) from the following data:
(a) Follower to move outward through 30 mm with simple harmonic motion during 120 of cam rotation.
(b) Follower to dwell for the next 60 .
(c) Follower to return to its original position with uniform velocity during 90 of cam rotation.
(d) Follower to dwell for the rest of the cam rotation.
