SECOND \EAR SECOND SEMESTER EXAMINATION

-
MECIIANICAL ENGiNEERING
KINEMATICS OF MACHiNES (KOM)
(scHEME - 2o1o)
Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 70

Note :Answer any FIVE questions.

All questions carry equal marks.

1. (a) Define and explain the terms : (6)

Mechanism, Machine, Kinematic link, Kinematic pair, Kinematic chain.

(b) Differentiate between : (8)

(r) Lower pair and higher pair

(ii) Turning pair and sliding pair
(iil) Screw pair and spherical pair
(iv) Closed pair and unclosed pair.
2. (a) What is inversion of mechanism? Explain with sketches all the inversions
of double-slider crank mechanism. Where these inversions are used? (7)
(b) A Hooke's joint connects two shafts which are having 165o as the
included angle. The driving shaft rotates uniformly at 1000 r.p.m. Find
the maximum angular acceleration of the driven shaft and the maximum
torque required if the driven shaft carries a flywheel of mass of 10 kg and
100 mm radius of gyration. (7)

3. (a) The crank of a slider crank mechanism is 15 cm and the connecting rod is
60 cm long. The crank makes 3000 r.p.m. in the clockwise direction.
When it has turned 45o from the inner dead centre position, determine
(i) Velocity of slider
(ir) Angular velocity of connecting rod"

(iir) Linear velocity of the mid-point of the connecting rod. (S)

(b) State and prove the Kennedy's theorem. (6)

Turn Over
4. (a) A four-bar chain is represented by a quadrilaterul ABCD in which AD is
fixed and is 200 cm long. The crank AB is 6.25 cm long rotates in a
clockwise direction at 95.5 r.p.m. and drives the link CD is 11.25 cm long
by means of the conhecting link BC is 17.5 cm long. Draw the velocity
and acceleration diagrams when angle BAD = 60' and B and C lie on the
same side of AD. Determine the angular velocity and angular
accelerations of links BC and CD. (8)
(b) Wtiat do you mean by Coriolis component of acceleration? Slhen it wili
exist? Prove that this component of 'acceleration is equal to 2xuxw
where u = linear velocity of the slider along the link, ru = angular velocity
of the rotating link. (6)

5. (a) A belt drive is required to transmit 10 kW from a motor running at

600 rpm. The belt is 12 mm thick and has a mass density of 0.001 g/mm3.
Safe stress in the belt is not to exceed 2.5 N/mm2, diameter of the driving
pulley is 250 mm, whereas the speed of the driven puiley is 220 rpm. The
two shafts are 1.25 m apart. The coefficient of friction is 0.25. Determine
the width of the belt. (10)
(b) Caiculate the brake power of an, engine which is running at a constant
speed of 300 r.p.m. and carries a rope brake dynamometer. The dead
weight on the engine and spring balance readings are 550 N and 100 N
respectively. The diameters flywheel and rope are 1.8 m and 18.75 mm
(4)

6. (a) Two gear wheels mesh externally and are to give a velocity ratio of 3 to 1.
The teeth are of involute form : module = 6 mm, addendum = one module,
pressure angle = 2C-. The pinion rotate at 90 r.pm. Find : (e)

(i) Number of teeth on pinion to avoid interference on it and the

corresponding number on the wheel
(ii) The length of path and arc of contact.
(iii) The number of pairs of teeth in contact.
(iv) The maximum velocity of sliding
(b) Two mating gears (i.e. iarger gear and pinion) have 40 and 20 involute
teeth of module 10 mm is 20' pressure angle. The addendum is one
module. Does the interference occurs? (5)

7. (a) What do you understand by epicyclic gear train? What are the merits and
demerits of an epicyclic gear train as compared to the reverted gear train
and compound gear train. (5)

(b) Determine a suitabie train of wheels to satisfu the requirement of a clock,

the minute hand of which is fixed to a spindle and'the hour hand to a
sleeve rotating freely on the same spindle. The pitch is the same for all
the wheels and each wheel has at least 11 teeth. The total number of
teeth should be as small as possible. (e)

minimum speed of 240 rpm. The length of the ball arm is 130 mm and
of the sleeve arm 80 rnm. The mass of each ball i"s 3 kg and of the sleeve
