E Reading
The teenagers that are changing the world

Salvador Gómez-Colón

Teenager Salvador Gómez-Colón was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 2016, Hurricane Maria destroyed Puerto
Rico and left the community with no clean water and no electricity. Salvador saw the damage that was caused.
Salvador could not ignore the problems that the people in his community faced, and he felt he had to do something
to help them. Every evening, as the sun set and night came, he felt very alone. He realized that the lack of light was
affecting him and that many other people felt the same. That is when he had his idea. He started a campaign and
raised more than $100,000 so he could buy solar-powered lamps. He provided light to hundreds of families, which
helped them move around their house, prepare food, hang out with each other and carry on with their daily life in a
more normal way. With the money he raised, he also bought washing machines that worked without electricity This
helped to prevent disease as people were able to keep their clothes and bedding clean.

Greta Thunberg

Greta Thunberg is the extraordinary Swedish schoolgirl with strong environmental values who made headlines in
August 2018 by refusing to go to school for three weeks. She wanted the Swedish government to take action and
fight climate change by following the Paris Agreement, a list of rules and guidelines for countries that are serious
about fighting climate change. Unable to vote, she felt that going on strike was a way she could make her voice
heard. She then continued to strike every Friday and the whole world began to take notice. In October 2018, she
spoke to a crowd of over 10,000 people at a demonstration in Helsinki, Finland, and encouraged them to fight for
changes and save the environment. In December of the same year, she was invited to speak at the United Nations
Climate Change Conference. Greta’s actions have inspired not only older generations, but also many other children
around the world. On 15 March 2019, hundreds of school students from nearly 100 countries around the world got
involved and went on strike with her. Greta has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
