Intersecting Cirlces Worksheet

The document discusses the coordinate geometry of circles, specifically focusing on proving intersections and tangents between various circle equations. It includes problems requiring the determination of whether circles touch, intersect, or lie within one another, along with specific coordinates for points of tangency. Additionally, it provides answers to the posed questions, including coordinates for touching points and the nature of intersections.

Coordinate Geometry of the Circle

Intersecting Circles

1. Prove that the circles 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 25 and 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 24𝑥 − 18𝑦 + 125 = 0 touch each other
and state the coordinates of the point where the two circles touch. [6]

2. Show that the circle 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 25 lies inside the circle 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 8𝑥 = 84 [3]

3. By considering the radii of each circle and the distance between their centres, determine
whether each pair of circles intersect, touch or do not intersect.

a. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 25 = 0 and 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 15𝑥 + 8𝑦 − 75 = 0 [2]

b. 𝑥 𝑦2 + 𝑦 2 = 16 and 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 3𝑥 − 5𝑦 − 6 = 0 [2]
c. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 25 and 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 24𝑥 − 18𝑦 + 125 = 0 [2]
d. (𝑥 − 8)2 + 𝑦 2 = 4 and (𝑥 − 2)2 + (𝑦 + 5)2 = 1 [2]
e. 𝑥 2 + (𝑦 − 3)2 = 9 and (𝑥 − 8)2 + (𝑦 − 5)2 = 144 [2]

4. Explain why the circles (𝑥 + 7)2 + (𝑦 + 2)2 = 4 and (𝑥 + 7)2 + (𝑦 − 4)2 = 16

touch at one point. Determine whether they touch internally or externally and find the
coordinates of the point at which they touch. [3]

5. Show that these pairs of circles touch each other and find the coordinates of the point where
they touch. In each case, sketch the circles to show how they touch.

a. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 8𝑥 − 4𝑦 + 19 = 0 and (𝑥 − 5)2 + (𝑦 − 2)2 = 4

b. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 6𝑥 − 4𝑦 + 3 = 0 and 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 12𝑥 + 2𝑦 − 3 = 0
