Dates and Time: MODULE NO. 3.6
10T Mon-Sat 10:30-11:00

SUBJECT MATTER: EQUATION OF A CIRCLE

LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
• Graph and solve problems involving circles and other geometric figures on the coordinate plane.

MINI COMPETENCIES:
 Sketch the graph of a circle given center – radius form of the equation
 Sketch the graph of a circle given the general form of the equation
 Solve word problems involving equations of circles.

Mini – Task (AS)

CHECKPOINT: Daisy Design

Directions: The following are examples of daisy design, an art one can make using circles, lines and
curves. In a long sized bond paper, your task is to create your own daisy design using circles and
other geometric figures. Make your work as neat as possible. You may color the design you have
created. Attach your finished work in this module when you pass.

Extension (S)

COORDINATE GEOMETRY OF THE CIRCLE AND Its GRAPH

A circle is a set of points (a lucos) which are equidistant from a fixed point called center. The distance
from the center to any point on the circle is called radius.

1
TRY IT OUT!
Give the radius and the coordinates of the center of the circle with the given equation. Then graph
the circle.
1. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 36 2. (x − 2)2 + (y + 6)2 = 49

2
3. x 2 + y 2 + 4x − 6y + 12 = 0 4. x 2 + y 2 + 6x − 2y + 6 = 0

Exercises (S)

A. Give the radius and coordinates of the center of the circle. Then graph the circle.

1) 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 1 = 0 2) 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 4

3) x 2 + 𝑦 2 − 2x + 6y − 6 = 0 4) 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 4x + 4y − 8 = 0

3
B. Solve the following word problems.
1) A circle has the equation 𝑥² + 𝑦² = 400 Find the area of the circle. Give your answer in
terms of 𝜋.

2) The equation of a 𝑐𝑖𝑟𝑐𝑙𝑒 𝐶, with centre 𝐴, is: (𝑥 − 3)² + (𝑦 + 2)² = 25. Show that point
(6, 2) lies on 𝐶.

Practice & Application (AS)

C. Give the radius and coordinates of the center of the circle. Then graph the circle.

1) 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 16 = 0 2) 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 9

4) x 2 + 𝑦 2 − 4x − 8y + 16 = 0 4) x 2 + 𝑦 2 + 6x − 8y + 24 = 0

4
D. Solve the following word problems.
1) AB is a diameter of a circle C. Q is the centre of the circle. A has coordinates (−2, 12)
and B has coordinates (8, 2).
(a) Find the equation of C.

(b) Show the point D, (10, 8) lies on C.

2) A cellular phone network uses towers to transmit calls.

Each tower transmits to a circular area. On a grid of a
town, the coordinates of the towers and the circular
areas covered by the towers are shown.
(a) Write the equations that represent the
transmission boundaries of the towers.

(b) Tell which towers, if any, transmit to phones

located at
𝐽(1, 1), 𝐾(4, 2), 𝐿(3.5, 4.5), 𝑀(2, 2.8), 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑁(1, 6).
