Questions:
1. Do you think Roger's personality has changed in the story, and in what way?2.
What do you understand about Mrs. Jones' living conditions from the story?

Answers:

Answer 1:
Roger’s personality has changed in the story because of the trust and kindness Mrs. Jones gave
him. Mrs. Jones was the first person who did not judge him by his race or appearance. She also
empathized with him which was a big part of this change. She mentioned her experience
without saying “but” to criticize because from what he had experienced, any other adult would not
tell their story without saying but she refused to do that and accepted that something similar
happened with her in her past. At one point Roger did not want to be “mistrusted” by Mrs.
Jones so he started trying to help her with chores like bringing milk from the nearby store. Mrs.
Jones did the right thing to teach Roger a lesson instead of punishing him. This also made him
realize that a person's race or what someone looks like from the outside does not matter. It all
matters from the inside. If the person’s kindhearted, truthful, and obedient. Therefore, Roger’s
personality changed in an exhilarating way, and that Mrs. Jones did the right thing not to punish
him.

Answer 2l

From what I can observe, Mrs. Jones living conditions were pitiful. Mrs. Jones was an old
woman living in a small house with a bedroom, a kitchenette, and a sink. She was living with
more people because when Roger came into the house, he heard other “roomers” laughing and
talking in the larger house which means she lived in a small apartment. If Ms. Jones were to be
living in a decent house or apartment instead of having a miniature “kitchenette,” she would
have a large kitchen. Besides this, Mrs. Jones is an old lady who is living alone, a small
apartment would not be enough for her. In conclusion, Mrs. Jones standard of living was not as
good as it should be.
