James Mercer Langston
Hughes (February 1, 1902 – May 22,
1967) was an African American poet,
social activist, novelist, playwright,
and columnist from Joplin, Missouri.
He moved to New York City as a
young man, where he made his
career.

contributor in Harlem
Renaissance.

• The Harlem Renaissance was an
intellectual, social, and artistic explosion
centered in Harlem, New York, spanning
the 1920s. At the time, it was known as the
"New Negro Movement“
• New African-American cultural expressions
across the urban areas
• The Harlem Renaissance is considered to
have been a rebirth of the African-
American arts.

Langston was raised mainly in
Lawrence, Kansas, by his maternal
grandmother, Mary Patterson
Langston. Through the black American
oral tradition and drawing from the
activist experiences of her generation,
Mary Langston instilled in her
grandson a lasting sense of racial pride.

Group 1: Continuing the Story – A Short Skit
Continue the story, assuming that the characters meet again. Write a dialogue
between Roger and Mrs. Jones in their second encounter (it could be a week later, a
month or a year), and be ready to perform the output.

Group 2: Altering the Ending – A Tableau Picture


Write a different ending to the story, and present it through a tableau picture.
One member shall read or explain the ending while others do a tableau.

Group 3: Acting out the Problem


Juvenile crime (a crime done by minors) can be a problem anywhere in the
world. Present a short role play showing a juvenile crime and its cause.
