DEFINITION
• Predominant manner in which program present itself to
the user
• The presentation of the program affects the way the user
relates to it, and this relationship strongly influences the
usability of the product.
DESKTOP POSTURE
• Different categories of desktop posture are:
• Sovereign posture
• Transient posture
• Daemonic posture
• Auxiliary posture
SOVEREIGN POSTURE
• Programs that are best used full-screen(long term)
• Offer large set of related functions and features\
• Examples
• Word processors
• Spread sheets
• E.mail applications
SOVEREIGN POSTURE
• Since user interact with sovereign programs dominate the
screen therefore as much real screen state should be
used as possible.
• Sovereign program should run maximize
• Sovereign should work well in different screen
configuration
• Color and texture of the visual presentation is very
critical(don’t use bright colors)
• The user can look at small images
SOVEREIGN POSTURE
• Visual feedback
• Provide an environment for rich visual feedback
• Type of visual indicators:
• Program status
• Status of data
• State of the system
BENEFITS
• Users with passage of time became familiar with these
advance features and because they have access to these
feature it gives them more power and control and that
would lead them to become more satisfied users.
DOCUMENT CENTRIC
APPLICATION
• Document window within sovereign program should also
fill the screen
• Many sovereign programs are document-centric (this
primary features involves the creation and viewing of
documents containing rich data.)
TRANSIENT POSTURE(COME
AND GO)
• Perform high-relief function with a tightly restricted set of
accompanying controls

• Can be called within sovereign application.

• E.g file save
OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
• Interface is presented more boldly in more detail as

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
• All information and facilities required should be on the
interface of single window
• Application should be moveable because the might
obscure the sovereign application
DAEMONIC POSTURE
• Programs that do not normally interact with the user are
daemonic posture programs.
These programs serve quietly and invisibly in the background,
performing possibly vital tasks without the need for human
intervention.
• A printer driver is an excellent example.
AUXILIARY POSTURE
• Programs that blend the characteristics of sovereign and
transient programs
• The auxiliary program is continuously present like a
sovereign program, but it performs only a supporting role.
