Thermodynamics Problems Dsadassolved

The document presents solutions to two thermodynamics problems involving a two-tank system with air and steam through a nozzle. For the two-tank system, the volume of the second tank is calculated as 2.21 m^3 and the final equilibrium pressure is 283.6 kPa. In the steam nozzle problem, the mass flow rate is determined to be 7.03 kg/s, with an exit velocity of 641 m/s and an exit area of 14.5 cm^2.

Thermodynamics Problem Solutions

Problem 1: Two-Tank System with Air

Problem 1: Two-Tank System with Air

Given:

- Tank 1: V1 = 1 m^3, P1 = 500 kPa, T1 = 25 degreesC = 298.15 K

- Tank 2: m2 = 5 kg, P2 = 200 kPa, T2 = 35 degreesC = 308.15 K

- Final temperature: Tf = 20 degreesC = 293.15 K

Step 1: Use the ideal gas law for Tank 1:

m1 = (P1 * V1) / (R * T1) = (500 * 1) / (0.287 * 298.15) ~ 5.83 kg

Step 2: Use the ideal gas law for Tank 2 to find V2:

V2 = (m2 * R * T2) / P2 = (5 * 0.287 * 308.15) / 200 ~ 2.21 m^3

Step 3: Total volume and mass:

V_total = V1 + V2 = 1 + 2.21 = 3.21 m^3

m_total = m1 + m2 = 5.83 + 5 = 10.83 kg

Step 4: Use ideal gas law for the final state:

Pf = (m_total * R * Tf) / V_total = (10.83 * 0.287 * 293.15) / 3.21 ~ 283.6 kPa

Answers:

- Volume of second tank: 2.21 m^3

- Final equilibrium pressure: 283.6 kPa

Thermodynamics Problem Solutions

Given:

- Inlet: P1 = 5 MPa, T1 = 400 degreesC, V1 = 80 m/s, A1 = 50 cm^2 = 0.005 m^2

- Exit: P2 = 2 MPa, T2 = 300 degreesC

- Heat loss: Q_dot = -120 kW

From steam tables:

- At 5 MPa, 400 degreesC: h1 ~ 3264.4 kJ/kg, v1 ~ 0.05688 m^3/kg

- At 2 MPa, 300 degreesC: h2 ~ 3045.2 kJ/kg, v2 ~ 0.132 m^3/kg

Step 1: Mass flow rate from continuity:

m_dot = (A1 * V1) / v1 = (0.005 * 80) / 0.05688 ~ 7.03 kg/s

Step 2: Apply energy equation:

-120 + m_dot * (h1 + V1^2/2) = m_dot * (h2 + V2^2/2)

-120 + 7.03*(3264.4 + 3.2) = 7.03*(3045.2 + V2^2/2000)

22855.1 = 7.03*(3045.2 + V2^2/2000)

Solve: V2 ~ 641 m/s

Step 3: Exit area:

A2 = (m_dot * v2) / V2 = (7.03 * 0.132) / 641 ~ 0.00145 m^2 = 14.5 cm^2

Answers:

- Mass flow rate: 7.03 kg/s

- Exit velocity: 641 m/s

- Exit area: 14.5 cm^2
