Jindal Stainless has developed IRS 350 CR and IRS 450 CR grades of low-carbon ferritic stainless steels to combat corrosion in steel bridges, which often leads to costly maintenance. These materials demonstrate superior corrosion resistance, high-cycle fatigue strength, and excellent fire performance, offering significant lifecycle cost savings of up to 59% despite higher initial costs. The stainless steels are 100% recyclable and provide a service life of over 120 years, making them a sustainable alternative for infrastructure applications in India.

Title - Stainless Steel – Sustainable Materials for Bridge & Infrastructure Applications

Abstract

Steel bridges in India often suffer premature deterioration due to corrosion, leading to
costly maintenance and reduced service life. To address this challenge, Jindal Stainless in co-
ordination with ISSDA developed IRS 350 CR and IRS 450 CR grades—low-carbon ferritic
stainless steels with 10.5–12.5% chromium. Extensive testing at IIT validated superior
corrosion resistance, high-cycle fatigue strength, and excellent fire performance. Life Cycle
Cost (LCC) studies demonstrate that, despite higher upfront investment, these grades offer
up to 59% savings in lifecycle cost and over 120 years of service life, outperforming
conventional carbon steel, Several Implemented Projects in Stainless Steel showcase the
transformative role in sustainable infrastructure.

Introduction

 Corrosion is the one of the largest cause of deterioration in steel bridges.

 Traditional mild steel (E350, E410) requires frequent painting & rehabilitation.
 Stainless steels IRS 350 CR & IRS 450 CR provide:
o Corrosion resistance in aggressive environments (marine, industrial, polluted
urban).
o High yield strength (350–450 MPa).
o 100% recyclability, aligning with green infrastructure goals.

Materials

Min
Category Property Max Value
Value
Chemical Composition Chromium (Cr) 10.5 12.5
Carbon (C) — Low
Nickel (Ni) — 1.5
Mechanical Properties Yield Strength 350 450
Tensile Strength 485 550
Elongation 20 22

 Testing Conducted:
o Corrosion (ISO 14993 cyclic exposure).
o High-cycle fatigue (2 million cycles, IRS 450 CR > IS 800:2007 curve).
o Fire (strength retention up to 400°C, superior to carbon steel).
 Fabrication: Weldable with SMAW/GMAW as per AWS

Results

Life Cycle Cost Comparison (IRS 450 CR vs MS E350):

 Initial Cost: +54% (SS higher).

 Material Saving upto 15%-30%
 LCC @ 60 yrs: –59% (SS cheaper).
 LCC @ 100 yrs: –46% (SS cheaper).
 Break-even point: 33 years.
 Service life: 120+ years (vs ~60 yrs for MS)

Discussion

 IRS 350/450 CR stainless steels outperform MS in service life, cost, aesthetics, and
sustainability.
 Applications: Rail bridges, foot over bridges, Truss Bridge, Major and Minor Bridges.
 Environment: Ideal for coastal, Hilly, industrial, and polluted regions.
 Sustainability: 100% recyclable, reduces CO₂ footprint, minimizes disruption.

Conclusions

 IRS 350 CR and IRS 450 CR are cost-effective long-term alternatives to carbon steel.
 Enable resilient, maintenance-free infrastructure.
 Transformative opportunity for Indian Railways & urban infrastructure.
