Celebration of Knowledge: The Group
July 25, 2025
Direction:
eM
• You have 4.5 continuous hours to celebrate . You are welcome to continue working and submit extra
problems you solve for feedback. Please mark where you stop for 4.5 hours.
• You will have until Sunday at Noon Pacific time to complete the Celebratory!
• The celebration consists of eight proof problems, with a random order of difficulty. Each problem
om
has two types of score: mathematical correctness (MC), which scores from 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7, and M.Tip’s
Style (MS) score, which ranges in intervals [0,1]. Your final score for the problem is MC *MS. You do
not need to do all of them do the one that you can or interesting!
• You may consult your note and problem set, but not other sources for help (books, internet, AI, friends,
enemies, teachers, parents, etc).
• You may submit a LATEX-PDF or a scanned handwritten document to the Google Classroom portal. If
es
you write your solution by hand, make sure your handwriting is legible and visible. If you use LATEXto
submit your solution, ensure the formatting is sufficiently clean. Either way, we reserve the right to
assign a zero score to submissions that are exceptionally difficult to read.
• When submitting your solution, make sure all your answers to the proof-based problems are on different
Aw
pages.
• Per AwesomeMath AI policy, if we suspect that your solution is AI generated, we reserved the right to
assigned you Negative Points.
• Lastly, have fun and stay alive :)

1 Celebration of Knowledge: The Group
1. Let G be a group, let a ∈ G, and let m, n be positive integers such that gcd(m, n) = 1. If am = e,
prove that there exist b ∈ G such that a = bn .
2. Let H and K be subgroups of a group G, and define
HK = {hk : h ∈ H, k ∈ K}.
Prove that HK is a subgroup of G if and only if HK = KH.
3. Determine the structure of the abelian group Z3 /K where K =< (2, 1, −3), (1, −1, 2) > a subgroup of
h
Z3 .
4. Prove that every group of order 77 is abelian.

5. Suppose a finite group G acts on a set A so that for every nontrivial g ∈ G there exists a unique fixed
point (i.e., there is exactly one a ∈ A, depending on g, such that g · a = a). Prove that this fixed point
is the same for all g ∈ G.
6. (Romania 20**)Let (G, ·) be a grup with neutral element e, and let H and K be proper subgroups of
eM
G, satisfying H ∩ K = {e}. It is known that (G \ (H ∪ K)) ∪ {e} is closed under the operation of G.
Prove that x2 = e for all the elements x of G.
7. (China TST) In set S, there is an operation ◦ such that for all a, b ∈ S, a unique a ◦ b ∈ S exists. The
operation also satisfies the following conditions.
(a) For all a, b, c ∈ S, we have (a ◦ b) ◦ c = a ◦ (b ◦ c).
(b) a ◦ b ̸= b ◦ c when a ̸= b.
om
Show that for all a, b, c ∈ S, (a ◦ b) ◦ c = a ◦ c.
8. (Romania 20**) Let G be the set of all finite groups with at least two elements.
√
p
(a) Prove that if G ∈ G, then the number of homomorphisms f : G → G is at most nn , where
n = |G| and p is the largest prime divisor of n.
es
(b) Find all the groups in G for which the above inequality is an equality.
