On Sunday, June 3rd, seven young teams under the age of 30 will compete for their chance to win the very first RAW title, $10,000 and the cover of our BTC Magazine.
their first challenge?
Stars arent born. Stardom only comes with hard work, unflagging energy, relentless drive and insane talent. We created RAW to uncover and discover the talent of our future. We challenged our sponsors to seek out their best young hopefuls, bring them together and let the creative magic unfold. Seven teams, handpicked by the industrys top mentors from the most promising new talent in salons from L.A. to New York to Toronto. Brought together to conceive, create and execute a hair show so revolutionary, so unique, so memorable, it will earn each member a place among the brightest stars in beauty. Lights. Dancers. Costumes. Makeup. Hair. All must be unforgettable; all must be nothing less than perfection. Thats what it takes to rule RAW! Theyre giving their hearts, souls, blood, sweat, guts and talent. And on June 3, theyll find out if they gave enough to win. To be hailed as the best up-and-coming stylists in the beauty industry. We guarantee its going to be unforgettable. At the end of the evening we will introduce the world to the beauty industrys most talented team of rising starsand the first hairstylists in history to take home the RAW grand prize! Good luck teams! Mary

Garren
Kind and generous, Ken will find something positive in every performance. His A-list clients value not only his hair skills but also his nurturing personality. But dont think hes going to be a pushover. His standards are high and hell expect the competitors to do what it takes to win!
Kens credentials: Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson and Lady Gaga; Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle, Harpers Bazaar, and Allure; Hair Department Head for The X-Factor; creator of Hairdo Clip-In Extensions.

Please share three important success tips for the RAW teams.
1. Dont worry about anyone else. Do YOUR thing and dont look back or sideways! 2. Color outside of the lines. Dont go for the usual. Strive for something no one has seen. 3. Dont give a thought to what anyone else says. OWN it and stand behind whatever you create. Its a competition, but art is subjective. Who would have wonPicasso or Chagall?
Judging criteria:
Our judges and everyone in the audience will be asked to judge on the following criteria to determine the winner. Best Overall Hair (cut, color and style) Best Overall Look (hair, makeup, wardrobe) Best Overall Production (using video, lights, music, choreography to produce a compelling show) Best Overall Concept (uniqueness in overall concept and entertainment)
I would close my mind off from anything I had seen before. I would avoid my usual references or places of inspiration. I like to look where no one else is looking; if I dont, Ill just see what they see. Life is a production. Real art doesnt come from people who can afford to buy all the right pieces. Thats easylike a puzzle. Creativity is making something out of nothing. That is pure magic.
If you were mentoring a team, how would you prepare them for RAW?
50% Audience Text Voting: Our theater audience and at-home viewers 50% Celebrity Judges: Ken Paves, Garren and Ellen Rakieten
I would encourage my team to dig deep and come up with something we have never seen before. I would tell them not to hold back, to look at this not as hair but as ART and the stage is the THEATRE. RAW is their Paris runway, their Broadway stage, their Grammys red carpet so make it count. Then I would tell them to kick some ASS!!
Get ready to choose the winner. Just like other competition shows, our text voting lines will be open after all teams have performed! You will be able to text your votes for a 10-minute period following the last team presentation.
when working on a set with X-factor contestants or with artists like Jennifer lopez, Jessica simpson or lady gaga, what are the key elements to consider and how does hair play a role?
Every production is a story and a journey. It must make us want to be part of it, leave us wanting more! Lights, music, wardrobe, makeup, choreography, models, pyro...whatever it takes. The lights go on and off, the music does too, but the hair is part of the artist on the stage. Its part of who they are and it can make or break their confidence. Its hugely important!

garrenthe perfectionist
With his vast experience and discerning eye, Garren is our professor of hair. His knowledge of the history of hair and fashion is encyclopedic. Hell coolly study every detail and his judging will be uncompromisingto say the least!
Scarlett Johansson, Audrey Hepburn; Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Versace, Christian Dior, Anna Sui, Calvin Klein; owner Garren New York salon; Behind the Cover columnist for behindthechair On Paper.
She spent 25 years as executive producer for Oprah, the most legendary and demanding woman in television, and during her tenure, she spotted a number of unknowns (Dr. Oz anyone?) and turned them into celebrities. She knows exactly what it takes to be a starand shell be looking for those qualities on the RAW stage. Stay tunedlives will be changed!
I entered a hair competition in my home town of Buffalo, NY in 1969. Christiaan, who was working for the Bergdorf Goodman salon at the time, was the judge. Christiaan is a legendhe worked with Calvin Klein and Yves St. Laurent, he hung out with Grace Jones in the 80s, he created the undercut. I won first place. Seven years after that competition, I had my first Vogue cover and found myself in Paris, working on collections for the best designers in the world.
The Oprah Winfrey Show; developed shows for Dr. Oz., Nate Berkus, Rachel Ray and Dr. Phil; partnered with Jerry Seinfeld to produce The Marriage Ref; currently has several shows in production.
Oprah and I were pioneers in the area of makeovers. And while I love production, if I wasnt a producer, I would be in fashion or design. Plus, I love the feeling of discovering new talent.
What three tips for success would you like to offer to the RAW teams?
1. Dont lose sight of the fact that its a hair competition. The hair has to stand out in a way that fits with the choreography, the makeup, and the costumes. 2. When you divvy up the chores, dont let feelings get in the way. The best colorist should direct the color. The best cutter should direct the cuts. Let the strongest person lead the way. Work as a team, but take advantage of the individual strengths on your team. And make sure to leave your attitude at home. If youve stayed up all night putting waves in hairpieces and you get to the set and its clear that straight pieces will work better, you cant get upset. 3. Choose the models that will best portray your vision. Its up to your models to give the audience and the judges a clear idea of your message. They have to engage and connect. This is huge. They have to communicate life. Its at least half of what well be looking at.
The mission statement for every Oprah show was: Uplift. Inform. Enlighten. Entertain. If we checked all those boxeswith music, lighting, a great performance, entertainmentit was a great show. 1. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so bring your game. Dont eat, dont sleep. Ive stayed up for days getting a show perfect. Theres no tired and no complaining. 2. Have a clear vision and dont second guess it. TV shows and films get into trouble when they start second guessing and changing the vision. That leads to a mess. Settle on the vision and hit it out of the park. 3. I started my career in a time when 190 talk shows came and went. Our mantra was never look over your shoulder. If you do, you lose your step and get overtaken. So forget about what other teams are doing and just focus on doing your best work.
1. Dont fail to focus. Dont overdo. Pick your message and stick to it. Dont have too many things going on. 2. Dont miss a single detail. The sets, the music, the modelseverything has to be flawless. Its like doing a fashion shoot or a fashion showall of the components have to come together to make a fabulous picture or show. There must be continuity and thats what Ill be looking for. But again, in the end, it has to be about the hair. 3. Dont fail to figure out the memorable moment. Something must grab us, make us stop and remember your team above all the rest.
1. Dont fall into any kind of drama, backstabbing, cattiness, hysteria. Keep it together, especially when youre tired. Keep your eye on the prize. 2. Dont try to accomplish too much. If youre going to go with an orange and pink and purple hair concoction, great, but dont also try to do a 70s shag. Dont try to hit too many nails or youll be all over the place.
3. Go for the wow, jaw-dropping factor, but dont let things drift into garish territory. Its hard to reinvent the wheel when so many amazing things have been done, but try not to be derivative.
