STRAND (TOPIC): The Weather – What are Clouds? Types of clouds

Objective: At the end of the lesson students should be able to:

COMPONENTS OF THE LESSON:
Introduction, Prompter/Hook (3 - 5 minutes)
Activate students’ prior knowledge with the following question, what do
you know about clouds? Have students read the poem entitled “Clouds”
Clouds
If I had a spoon as tall as the sky
I’d scoop up the clouds that go slip sliding by.
I’d take them right in and give Mom to cook,
And see if they taste as good as they look.
Time to teach: (10 - 14 minutes)
Taking students outside, have students observe the clouds that are
present. Encourage students to pay attention to the different shapes
and size.
Elicit from students, what can we say is the definition or meaning of
clouds?
Define the term clouds. Clouds are made of to billions of tiny
drops of water. They form at different heights in the sky.
Explain to students that there are many types of clouds and they are
only going to learn about the three main types of clouds - cumulus,
cirrus and stratus
Engage students in a discussion on where do they think the rain
comes from?
Time to practise: (15 – 30 minutes)
Have students create models of any of the three types of clouds using
cotton balls.
Time to Reflect and Share (3-5 minutes)
Have students observe a video to reinforce lesson, then allow students to
share what they have learnt
How the lesson includes the students’ contexts
After this lesson, they should become more aware of the cloud patterns,
which would allow them to become more observant as to the different
types of clouds.
