Character traits
Dara is a shy girl

Evidence
Chapter2: 1) When Dara first came to Nong Chan with her family, she was shy and hesitated at first to bathe in the open with Nea. 2) Later when she first met Grandpa Kem, she only nodded a shy nod towards him. Chapter3: 3) When Dara first got to know more about Jantu, Dara did not introduce herself first. Instead, she answered Jantus questions until she trusted her as a friend. Dara was very embarrassed and shy when Jantu talked about her directly before her. Chapter4: 1) Dara was kind enough to hold Jantus baby brother on her lap and just after a day/ two; she already felt a bond with Baby. Chapter8: 2) Although Baby is not Daras own baby brother, Jantu begged for help frantically when he was badly injured. In the end, she managed to find help. Chapter14: 3) Even after a day of hard work packing up till they had a sore back, Dara was very determine to find Jantu and Baby. This is a very kind act of Dara.

Dara slowly becomes independent developing the novels theme of psychological growth. Chapter7: 1) In the bomb blast, Baby is badly injured and the girls are left with Baby alone without their families. Dara is forced to find help alone for Baby, leaving Jantu with Baby. This is her first step of independency. Chapter8: 2) Dara successfully leads a medic back to help Baby. Jantu and Baby are then taken to a hospital In another refugee camp. Here on, Dara has to go on and find the rest of the family in that mess. Chapter13: 3) Dara insisted that the families should try to force Sarun to lead them home by secretly preparing the oxcart to leave. Dara did most of the packing job.

August 8, 2011 Chapter7: 1) Ill get help, I said. & And with the sound of their wails ringing in my ears, I rushed off. Chapter8: 2) It would be dark before too long, I thought, but I would not be afraid. Chapter13: 3) He doesnt need to know. And he probably wouldnt be interrupted anyway. I answered
