English II Honors

Students enrolled in English II Honors read, discuss, analyze, and write about both classical and contemporary world literature including novels, short stories, drama, prose, and poetry. Students continue to explore language for expressive, informational, explanatory, critical, argumentative, and literary purposes, although emphasis is placed on informational contexts in preparation for the North Carolina Writing Test. The English II Honors course encourages students to generate thought-provoking questions and topics and to research diverse sources. Students will work as self-directed and reflective learners, both independently and in groups as leaders and collaborators. Higher level thinking skills will be emphasized through interdisciplinary and critical perspectives as reflected in the quality of student performance in oral language, written language, and other media/technology. Students also concentrate on enlarging vocabulary, refining grammatical skills, honing technology skills, improving comprehension, developing study skills, and widening personal reading. Upon completion students are prepared for English III, English III Honors or AP English Language and Composition. Course Goals and Objectives: The learner will react to and reflect upon print and non-print text and personal experiences by examining situations from both subjective and objective perspectives. The learner will evaluate problems, examine cause/effect relationships, and answer research questions to inform an audience. The learner will defend argumentative positions on literary or nonliterary issues. The learner will critically interpret and evaluate experiences, literature, language, and ideas. The learner will demonstrate understanding of selected world literature through interpretation and analysis. The learner will apply conventions of grammar and language usage. The learner will investigate informational communication through

o Exploring print and non-print texts to extend study of self-selected topics relevant to world literature and/or history o Analyzing and developing effective strategies for integrating a variety of support (including direct quotations, personal experiences/observations, and current events) into written and oral products o Using precise language and sentence variety to create style and tone appropriate to the audience and purpose. o Planning, designing, and self-monitoring as students create a variety of texts.

Content Rights This course was designed by the North Carolina Virtual Public School. The materials and resources that would be used with the textbook (audio and printed materials) in a face-to-face course have been adapted for the online setting and comply with educational use standards. The course content is fair use and compliant with the Technology, Education, and Copyright Harmonization Act. Grading Scale NCVPS does not issue a letter grade for courses. Schools receive a cumulative grade as a percent. NCVPS Late Work Policy Orientation is provided to provide you with a basic set of skills for online instruction and an overview of the Blackboard course management system. Dates and times are listed in the class schedule as well as in the course Web site. You are responsible for all material covered and all assignments given, regardless of personal illness, family emergency, or computer system failures. Although this is an online course, it is not self-paced. Reasonable deadlines have been set to insure that you have adequate time to complete all assignments within the current session. Active participation in this class is required. Students should strive to complete assignments according to the deadlines stated for each assignment in the course. Late work is not accepted unless extenuating circumstances have been determined by the teacher, such as; illness, family emergency, or relocation. Academic integrity of all students must be maintained, and NCVPS considers it to have a high degree of importance. Academic Integrity determines that all assignments and exams submitted by a NCVPS student is his/her own and the student: will not plagiarize* any material in written or verbal forms will not share your work with others, unless directed by your instructor, or copy the work of others and represent it as your own will apply appropriate use of information literacy * To plagiarize is to copy or use the ideas and/or words of another and represent them as your own.

The accuracy in which students work is submitted to NCVPS is of great importance and NCVPS reserves the right to use technology, such as Turnitin.com or SafeAssign to investigate plagiarism. The academic integrity for all students must be maintained. Any student, who has plagiarized a work in any manner, will receive disciplinary action up to and including removal from the NCVPS course with a failing grade. NCVPS Privacy Policy The North Carolina Virtual Public School will abide by the student privacy guidelines set forth by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). The following persons have access to student records: NC SBE members NCVPS Executive Director. administrative team, and professional staff of NCVPS (teachers, guidance counselor, student support services staff) Appropriate administrative support staff members and other professionals who have a legitimate educational or legal interest in student records as designated by the NCVPS Executive Director. Lab facilitators assigned by LEA who use school labs to access NCVPS courses North Carolina Virtual Public School provides an academic transcript to the student's primary school of record upon completion of the online course(s), or upon any request of the primary school and/or student's legal guardian. In accordance with state and federal privacy laws, students who attain the age of 18 may transfer certain rights related to their academic records. Some LEA schools may assign a lab facilitator to help students who use school labs to access NCVPS courses. Facilitators will have access to students online work from their school. No member of the NCVPS staff is authorized to release student information without the written permission of the students legal guardian or without approval of the NCVPS Executive Director. Names, images, and/or course work of NCVPS students will not be published in print, video/film, or via the web without written student and guardian consent. The privacy of all NCVPS students is protected through a unique password to access online courses. It is the student's responsibility to keep his/her password in confidence. Security Information: All the data you provide to us is protected to ensure both the privacy and security of your data. We use state-of-the art technology to keep your personal information as secure as possible to ensure that no one will be able to tamper with, intercept or access your data. Remember to keep your account information private and secure; do not share your password with anyone!

Make-Up Guidelines English II Honors students are encouraged to follow the assignment schedule posted under the Due Dates button in the course menu. Lessons will remain open for one week following the posted due date. At that point, the lesson will close, students can no longer submit work, and any missing assignment will be assigned a 0. All 1st quarter lessons will reopen for make-up work during the final week of the 1st quarter - 80% is highest possible score for work turned in during this time. All 2nd quarter lessons will reopen for make-up work during the final week of the 2nd quarter 80% is highest possible score for work turned in during this time. Students should make an effort to turn in all missing assignments during this make-up period. Lessons will be opened on adaptive release in special cases. Contact your teacher if you have concerns about your progress or your grade! Click the "My Teacher" button on the left to find your teacher's contact information. Issues of a Technical Nature: 1. Technical support is provided by a help desk by the NCVPS at 1-866-223-1028. The instructor does not provide technical support for non-course related questions. However, you are expected to inform the instructor via email with any technical problems that you are having that may delay an assignment due date. You are responsible for saving all assignments correctly, so you can turn them in electronically. You should be comfortable using word processing software, and have reasonable keyboarding skills.
