Josh Toon 3-9-10 CI 473 Final Lesson Plan Statement of Purpose The goal of this lesson is to have the

students read an article about Rugby and Basketball and then try to invent a new sport that combines their ideas with the aspects of both sports. At the end of the lesson we will play the new sport that the students have invented. Then we will discuss what we liked about the game and what we can change to make it more fun. ISBE Reading Standards 1.A.5a. Identify and analyze new terminology applying knowledge of word origins and deviations in a variety of practical settings 1.B.5a. Relate reading to prior knowledge and experience and make connections to related information. ISBE Writing Standards 3.B.4c Evaluate written work for its effectiveness and make recommendations for its improvement. ISBE Physical Education Standards 19.C.3a. Apply rules and safety procedures in physical activities 20A.1b. Engage in sustained physical activity that causes increased heart rate, muscle strength and range of movement 21.B.4. Work cooperatively with others to achieve group goals in competitive and noncompetitive situations (e.g., challenge course, orienteering). Procedure Pre-reading strategy: Student demonstrations, watch a short video on both sports, and then teacher will clarify the rules and strategies of both sports. During reading strategy: Give students visuals while they are reading about both sports so they know what a certain rule looks like when followed during play. Post reading strategy: Students will then participate in activities that help explain the rules and then take a quiz about the sports. Struggling Students: The students that have a hard time reading will benefit more from the demonstrations and the visuals. While they are reading I will help them focus on the key points about both sports. They will be given plenty of time to reading and practice time to get a better understanding of the rules.

Day 1 (10min) Students will watch a video about the rules on Rugby and Basketball. After the video I will ask the students questions about the rules for both sports. Then I will call on a few students to demonstrate some of the rules they just saw in the video. ( These demonstrations help address this standard). 19.C.3a. Apply rules and safety procedures in physical activities. (20min) Students will now get into groups of 5. They will be given an article about both sports. They are to read the articles together as a group and start brainstorming ideas to invent a new sport. Think about the rules, offensive and defensive strategies, and scoring system. The teacher will give each group a copy of visuals that will help them understand what the rule looks like.
(5min) Students will be given a short, 10 question, quiz on what they saw in the videos.

The quiz will be on the rules of both Rugby and Basketball and vocabulary. (The quiz helps address this standard). 1.A.5a. Identify and analyze new terminology applying knowledge of word origins and deviations in a variety of practical settings Homework: Students will take a copy of both articles home and read them again to refresh what they learned today in class. They are to write at least 2 paragraphs. At least one paragraph should be about their experiences with both sports and the other should be about an idea for a new sport. Have them think of the similarities and differences of both sports. They are to turn this in at the beginning of class tomorrow. 1.B.5a. Relate reading to prior knowledge and experience and make connections to related information. Day 2 (5min) Students will get in their same groups of 5 as yesterday and discuss the homework. They will briefly describe their own experiences with the sports and give their idea for the new sport to their group. (25min) Students will stay in their groups and that will be their team for this activity. The students will participate in a modified game of Rugby first and then a game of Basketball. There will be 2 games going on at the same time. After the students played for 5 minutes, the losing team will switch over to the other side of the gym and place the other winning team. We will do the same thing for basketball after 10 minutes. (Addresses these standards). 19.C.3a. Apply rules and safety procedures in physical activities 20A.1b. Engage in sustained physical activity that causes increased heart rate, muscle strength and range of movement 21.B.4. Work cooperatively with others to achieve group goals in competitive and non-competitive situations (e.g., challenge course, orienteering). (5min) Students will get in their same groups of 5 and talk about what they liked and did not like about both sports. Have them start to think about what to incorporate into the new

sport. Homework: Students will come up with their own sport that is a mix between Rugby and Basketball. It must include a name, rules, a scoring system, and offensive and defensive strategies. They can use the articles that were given to them yesterday and look up additional information on the internet. This will be turned in tomorrow at the beginning of class. Day 3 (5min) Students will turn in their homework and get into their same groups of 5. The teacher will then lead them through a stretching routine. (25min) Each group will give a 5 minute presentation to the class about their sport. They will give a handout to each student that describes the new sport. They will talk about all the categories from the homework and give a brief demonstration of the sport. Students will take notes on each groups presentation because there will be a quiz at the end of class. At the end of each presentation, each student will write down what they liked about the groups new sport idea and what they think needs improvement. (This addresses this standard). 3.B.4c Evaluate written work for its effectiveness and make recommendations for its improvement. (10min) Quiz-Students will write down the name of each new sport that was introduced by each group and give 1 rule and 1 example of the scoring system used for each new sport. They are to turn in the quiz when they are done and sit away from the people still taking the quiz. Rubric for Writing Assignment
