Baselight 4.

3
A compelling combination of new features

With more than twenty new features and dozens of other enhancements Baselight version 4.3 is a software release no colourist will want to be without

Multiple UI Monitors
The Baselight user interface display can now be split across two or even three monitors giving you much more space to arrange your working environment. Each monitor contains its own set of workspace views which you can fully customise by choosing to display only those tools and panels you need for a specific task. Panels can be freely positioned within the workspaces and you can toggle between them at the touch of a button according to the current task at hand.

Each scope is a separate panel which can be opened as a floating window or docked in the UI allowing you to choose the best monitoring setup for the current workflow. Different configurations can be preset within the userdefinable workspaces and the new multihead UI allows all the scopes to be docked into a single monitor. Live Measurements When the mouse pointer is clicked within the main image display a live readout appears on all scopes plus the histogram indicating values for the currently selected part of the image. A key advantage of builtin scopes is that they are not restricted to a standard video signal format and will therefore work with material at any resolution. A further benefit is that the scopes measure the image before the application of a Truelight emulation profile allowing you to check the output levels of the image itself before a display LUT is applied, unlike an external scope.

Scopes
Baselight version 4.3 includes builtin Vectorscope, RGB Parade, YCbCr Parade and Luma Waveform displays plus a new high precision histogram. Accurate levels are displayed along with an indication of illegal colours according to the currently set combiner output range.

Multiple Tabbed Galleries

The new software adds a second Baselight Gallery plus tabs in each to allow you to quickly switch between multiple Galleries, while remaining within the same scene. Any Gallery can be set to automatically load into the tabbed gallery pages and you can also load a scene or even the current timeline as a gallery providing you with a storyboard view of the scene. Direct access to multiple Galleries along with Gallery notes and metadata, plus the new thumbnail dragndrop feature allow you to quickly and easily find and copy the shots and grades you need, without having to open multiple scenes or timelines.

UI Enhancements
DragnDrop To further speed up the process of setting grades on single or multiple shots, it is now possible to drag and drop grades from one thumbnail to another. The same process can also be used to move thumbnails from one place to another, allowing you to rearrange shots in the timeline or Galleries as desired.

Performance Improvements
Background Caching Baselight 4.3 will silently render all the shots in the current timeline into a disk cache during idle time, making it possible to play back immediately and saving a considerable amount of render time. A colourcoded bar along the top of the timeline indicates the cache status of the current frames. Intermediate Cache Strip 4.3 adds the ability to cache a grading stack up to a specific layer and then use that cache as the source for the rest of the stack. This means that timeintensive operations such as temporal degrain only have to be applied once. The Cache Strip also improves performance when working with Bayerpattern sources by ensuring that the RAW input images are only converted once.

Dragndrop between Galleries and Cutview

Dragndrop is contextsensitive meaning that the system will automatically present you with a popup message indicating available functions according to the placement of the dragged thumbnail(s) in the UI. The draganddrop function also allows multiple shots to be dragged into a gallery in a single operation.

Strip Categories
Any strip within a Baselight grade can now be tagged with one or more categories to enable selective viewing, bypass or rendering. Tag categories are indicated by coloured slashes on the strips in the timeline.

Thumbnail Notes and Metadata Display The rightclick menu for thumbnails now includes the option to add notes and comments to shots in the Cutview or any open Gallery. The menu also allows you to choose metadata items to be displayed below the thumbnails. Numerous Other UI Enhancements Weve also added lots of other cool features such as inertial panning, extended mousewheel scrolling and timeline alignement tools, making it even more easy and fun to work with Baselight.

New Stereo 3D Tools

Fully automatic Stereo Geometry Fix The Stereo Geometry Fix tool now includes a fully automatic mode which provides singleclick correction of misaligned stereo 3D shots. It is no longer necessary for you to manually pick points in the image to be used by the correction process an advanced analysis engine does all the work for you. Detected features can be displayed on the image allowing you to check their accuracy.

StereoGrade StereoGrade is a new feature which combines common stereoscopic adjustments such as convergence and floating windows into a single tool, providing specific depth grading functionality within a stereo 3D scene. When applied to geometrycorrected material the StereoGrade allows you to make artistic changes to the 3D appearance of a shot quickly and effectively. Most of the parameters in the StereoGrade can be controlled using the Blackboard, for example the position and angle of floating windows plus convergence can be adjusted quickly and precisely in one operation using the trackballs.

Automatic stereo 3D geometry alignment feature detection

Geometric correction is automatic and is able to handle severely skewed shots without introducing significant distortion or shearing. Depending on the nature of the misalignment different transforms may be applied including translate, rotate, scale, perspective and combinations of these corrections in a specified order. Twophase corrections are also supported. The algorithms we use are extremely robust and able to accurately correct geometric errors where a significant number of the features are misplaced by up to 2025%. It is also possible to finetune the correction process by manually removing individual feature alignment points. The automatic geometry fix is a very fast process allowing you to quickly try out different transformations to get the best result for any shot. It can also be used in conjunction with Grouped Grading mode allowing you to automatically correct several shots, or an entire timeline with just one click.

Floating windows can be adjusted using the track balls

A new oneclick function allows you to set the zero convergence plane at a specific point in the image providing a very quick way to match the convergence between shots. The StereoGrade also includes a depth readout allowing you to check the disparity value at any point in the 3D image.

Truelight match grade

Another powerful new feature is the Truelight Cube match grade which allows all the grades in the timeline to be reduced to a LUT for export, or alternatively grades can be replaced with a LUT in the timeline to simplify the scene.

Matte Enhancements
Matte Tools The new Matte Tools operator simplifies matte creation and manipulation by combining the separate functions of matte filtering and refining into a single strip. Filters available within the Matte Tools strip include Gaussian Blur, Inwards/Outwards Blur, Erode/Dilate and Median. Threshold and curve functions can also be applied to fill holes, adjust choking and further refine the matte. Multiple filtering and refinement stages can be applied in any order within a single Matte Tools strip and additional stages can be added or removed as required. Matte Channel Display A new button on the Baselight parameters panel gives access to the Stack Manager matte channels within the main UI. This new Matte Elements panel mirrors the buttons which were previously only available via the stack manager buttons on the Blackboard, enabling the same functionality in Baselight Editions products.

YCrCb Grade
The Video Grade now includes an additional option to grade in YC colour space. This makes it very easy to adjust, for example, the contrast of an image without affecting the saturation. As with all other grading controls in Baselight, each parameter can be mapped onto the Blackboard allowing you to set it up according to your specific requirements. The YCrCb Video Grade can be used in conjunction with the RGB Grade within one operator and the order in which the grades are applied can be customised via an option in the grade menu.

Layer Manager
The Layer Manager is another powerful new feature which we added to bring Blackboard functionality into the main UI screen. It enables the direct selection, addition, deletion and ordering of layers within the current shot. This and many other features have been included in the 4.3 software release to ensure full compatibiltiy with all Baselight systems and products including Baselight Editions for Final Cut Pro. Object Tracker
Baselights automatic multipoint object tracking system has been enhanced with the addition of an areabased tracker. You can now define an area in the image rather than individual points and the system will accurately track the translation, rotation and scale of the object. As with the point trackers it is possible to track forwards or backwards, and also specify new references or add offsets during the track if required. Additional settings allow you to disable the rotation or scale of the track if required.
