Qantas/SAA state their case

SOUTH African Airways has revealed that its continuing to make heavy losses on its Qantas codeshare operations between Sydney and Johannesburg. The International Air Services Commission yesterday released new submissions from QF and SAA (TD 07 Feb) in support of their application to continue the pact, following last years IASC draft decision which proposed only granting the carriers a one year extension (TD 18 Nov) - a far cry from the five years requested. Qantas says its deeply concerned about the broader policy implications of the draft decision, saying that the IASC is overly relying on observations of the South Africa market during V Australias brief foray into flights between MEL and JNB. There is no evidence whatsoever to support the Commissions assertion the code share arrangements may have contributed to V Australias losses on the route, QF submitted. Qantas urged the IASC to review its draft decision and to remove the capacity cap in favour of a more market based approach. And SAA said that while its making a small profit on the Perth flights, adding a seventh weekly service as requested by the IASC would be exceptionally difficult.

A380 cracks very minor - QF

WIDESPREAD reporting about cracks in the wings of A380 aircraft is a major overreaction to a minor design issue, according to QF head of operations Alan Milne. This morning TD was among a select group who spoke with Milne during a walk-around of the Qantas operations centre, during which he used a piece of the wing from the A380 which suffered engine failure above Indonesia in Nov 2010 to indicate the small scale of the problem. Inside the massive wings of the superjumbo are about 2000 metal ribs which form the structure - and each of these ribs is fastened using a multipleredundant structure of six bolts. The tiny cracks, which were only discovered because of the repair work required for the QF32 plane, have been found in just one of the six brackets on each rib, in less than 1% of the ribs in the A380s. The cracks shouldnt be there, and Airbus has redesigned the part, but in the worst case they only appeared in 20 of the ribs, according to Milne. Once the issue was discovered during the Qantas repair, authorities in Europe mandated checks of all A380s to resolve the minor problem which has not in any way affected airworthiness. Milne also revealed that the A380 under repair in Singapore is almost set to fly again, with a significant event planned in late Mar to celebrate its return to the skies almost 18 months after the Rolls Royce engine explosion.

New Air NZ promo

AIR New Zealand has launched what its calling its biggest Australian campaign in the last ten years, with four webisodes tracking how it changed the mind of four Aussie sceptics who said they would never cross the ditch in a million years. Air NZ said that although there are 5.3 million Australians who seriously consider NZ as a destination, only one in five of these people actually make it across the ditch each year. The campaign has debuted online at a dedicated website at www.kiwisceptics.com, and the videos can be viewed by clicking on the Travel Daily TV logo or at traveldaily.com.au/videos.

Major Asian aviation growth

THE International Air Transport Association has outlined the expected boom in Asia-Pacific aviation in coming years, with traffic to or within the region expected to comprise 37% of total global passenger numbers by 2015 - up from 33% in 2010. IATA ceo Tony Tyler told a conference in Singapore yesterday that increasing prosperity in China is set to drive huge propensity to travel. The average person in the US travels by air 1.8 times per year, while in Germany the equivalent is one trip annually, he said. In contrast, for China the average is 0.2 air trips per person per year and for India it is just 0.1 - and with the growing middle class in each country its expected to create billions more travellers in the next decade, Tyler said.

VALENTINES Day is always something special, but spare a thought for the impact it has on customs and quarantine officers around the world. Many of the romantic red roses which are being given to sweethearts today are imported from South America and require inspection at major ports of entry. In the USA, the Association of Floral Importers of Florida says that this year at Miami International Airport officials will inspect more than 670 million Valentines Day flowers with almost all of them arriving in the USA this week. In Australia the cooler and wetter summer means that more blooms than usual will be coming in from overseas, with most arriving from Colombia in the last week or so.

The changes will see Austrian drop Mumbai as a destination, with the 767 aircraft deployed on the route to instead operate to Tel Aviv and to Tehran. The carrier will continue to fly six times a week to New Delhi. Tripoli flights will relaunch in Mar, after ceasing about a year ago due to the unrest in Libya, and Austrian is also reducing its Stockholm services to three flights per day.

NZ tourism merger
THE Tourism Industry Association of New Zealand, which represents many of the countrys tourism operators, has announced a proposal to merge with the New Zealand Hotel Council (NZHC). The bodies said that integrating would see the creation of a single strong high-profile wellresourced association, with the plan unanimously backed by the boards of both organisations. Jennie Langley, chair of the NZHC, said that creating a unified, highly focused leadership for the visitor industry would maximise its voice and influence over governments and other decision makers. Members of both groups would continue to receive their current services and benefits, and TIA chairman Norm Thompson said they planned to have the new Integrated Association in place by 01 Apr - before this years TRENZ which will take place in Queenstown during May. We are confident the integration will be of significant benefit to all members as well as the wider visitor industry, he said, with discussions with other tourism groups also planned to look at further opportunities for consolidation.

MEANWHILE, CX has today reported an 11.9% year on year increase in pax carried on its combined aircraft with Dragonair during Jan up to 2,511,043 pax. AFTA UPDATE
The latest insights from AFTAs Chief Executive, Jayson Westbury
Well, happy Valentines Day to everyone, I hope that you remembered your Valentine. It is a great day to remember those who are close to us and so often we take for granted. The travel industry can really challenge a relationship particularly if you are away from your other half or the family a lot and its days like today that can really make you stop for a little while and thank the special person in your life for being an important part of what you do and who you are. So a big thank you to all those wonderful other halves that help so much to make many in the travel industry who they are. Moving to federal politics, it is clearly going to be another hot week in Canberra with plenty of rocky roads to travel with some of the legislation being put before the parliament. One that will be of interest to the travel industry is the Private Health Rebate legislation. There is no question that any cut to rebates and incentives have an impact on discretionary spending even if for no other reason than the uncertainty that this type of policy and legislation introduces to consumers mindset. I would also like to join the many that congratulated Phil Hoffmann last Saturday night at the ICCA awards in which he was awarded the Neil Frazer Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Cruise Industry by an Individual. Well done to Phil and extremely well deserved by a man who has dedicated so much of his life to travel and of course the wonderful joy of cruise. Its also great to hear that the Australian cruise industry has not felt the shockwaves felt elsewhere in the world following the Costa incident in January. A further big congratulations to all the winners at the ICCA cruise night of nights. Well done to all concerned.

Athens unrest
PROTESTERS have taken to the streets of Athens, furious about the Greek parliament passing new austerity measures to help the country survive its prolonged debt crisis. The UK Foreign Office issued an updated travel advice warning British travellers to avoid large crowds and demonstrations. Several buildings were set on fire in the Greek capital, with police firing tear gas into demonstrators in the city in an attempt to calm the situation. Its estimated that the ongoing unrest in Greece as well as the depressed European economy has seen hotel prices fall by as much as 20% in the country - and theres little prospect of an increase in domestic visitors because the new measures will see public sector job cuts and a reduction in the minimum wage.

Branson supports mate

SIR Richard Branson has accepted an offer to be the Number 1 Membership Holder at Tasmanias Quamby Estate Golf & Country Club, which is now owned by his pals and former Virgin Blue executives Brett Godfrey and Rob Sherrard. The pair bought the iconic property in Jun last year and have developed a fresh and exciting vision for Quamby which they have backed with funding to upgrade the property.
