Activity 1.1- Answers / Aktiwiteit 1.

1 - Antwoorde

1.1. They are man-made objects orbiting high above Earth’s surface.

1.2. Weather forecasting, navigation, communication, town planning, geology and

prospecting.

Weervoorspelling, navigasie, kommunikasie, stadsbeplanning, geologie en

prospektering.

1.3. Satellites have scanners that scan Earth strip by strip by moving from side to
side. They send the information they capture back to earth in the form of
electronic signals. Computers then turn these signals into images.

1.4. Satellites keep constant watch and can spot new weather systems that are born.
They can then predict the movement of the systems and when or where it will
reach areas. This can save many lives. They can take pictures of clouds. It can
measure moist in the air and predict precipitation. It can measure surface and air
temperature. It can monitor and warn about climate changes.

1.5. They don’t see white light so the colours on the images are false. The images
they produce are different to photographs. Its optical sensors cannot see
through dark clouds.

1.6. Satellites collect data such as new mineral deposits, which can be helpful to
prospectors and geologists. They can help town planners with info as to where
to do new developments. They give info on Earth’s resources such as the
oceans, land, forests and mineral resources. They can guide ships through the
oceans and aircraft through the air with info on weather systems.

1.7. Satellites keep a constant watch and spot when new weather systems are born
and follow them hour by hour. Meteorologists can predict with more accuracy
when and in which region a weather system will reach, especially with tropical
cyclones. This can save many lives. They can measure UV radiation and
temperatures on the surface and different levels in the atmosphere and give
warnings to citizens. They can measure moist in the air and predict rainfall and
evaporation rates.
