Types of
Satellites
WEATHER SATELLITES
Weather satellites are mainly used to check the climate and weather
conditions of the Earth. They continuously measure the amount of heat
energy released from the earth's surface. This helps the meteorologists
to predict the weather conditions. They use radiometers for measuring
the intensity of radiation released from the earth's surface. The first
successful weather satellite (TIROS-1) was launched by NASA on
April 1, 1960.Weather satellites are launched into two types of orbits:
geostationary orbit and polar orbit.
Polar weather satellites
The weather satellites that are placed in polar orbit are called polar
weather satellites or . Polar weather satellites revolve around the earth at a
height of 850 km. The polar weather satellites are also called as sun-
synchronous weather satellites.

Geostationary weather satellites

The weather satellites that are placed in geostationary orbit are called
geostationary weather satellites or geostationary meteorological satellites.
Geostationary weather satellites revolve around the earth at a height of
35,880 km.
earth observation
satellite
An Earth observation satellite or Earth
remote sensing satellite is a satellite used or
designed for Earth observation (EO) from
orbit, including spy satellites and similar
ones intended for non-military uses such as
environmental monitoring, meteorology,
cartography and others.
COMMUNICATION
SATELLITE
A communications satellite is a type of artificial satellite
that is placed in Earth’s orbit for the purpose of sending
and receiving communication data between a source and
destination. It is used to provide data communication and
relaying services.
It is a wireless communication device that uses a transponder to send
and receive data to and from Earth. It is primarily used to redirect
communication data from one Earth-based communication station to
another station. Typically, a communications satellite works when it
receives data from terrestrial stations in the form of electromagnetic
waves. The data is usually sent via large satellite dishes.
Navigation satellites
Navigation Sartellite is a satellite designed to enable
operators of aircraft, vehicles, or vessels to determine their
geographical position. With the help of this system, small
electronic receivers calculate their position, including
latitude, longitude, and height from the mean sea level with

coverage is called Global Navigation Satellite
System (GNSS). The United States GPS (Global
Positioning System), the Russian GLONASS
(Globalnaya Navigazionnaya Sputnikovaya
Sistema), Galileo, and compass are the examples
Astronomical
satellite
An astronomy satellite is basically a really big
telescope floating in space. Because it is in orbit
above the Earth, the satellite's vision is not clouded
by the gases that make up the Earth's atmosphere,
and its infrared imaging equipment is not confused
by the heat of the Earth. Astronomy satellites,
therefore, can "see" into space up to ten times better
than a telescope of similar strength on Earth
Miniaturized Satellite
The miniaturized satellites revolve around the
earth just like the normal satellites. However,
these satellites have low mass and small physical
size. The mass of a miniaturized satellite is below
600 kg. The cost required to launch the
miniaturized satellites is very less compared to the
heavier satellites.
