Principals Message
As I sit down to write my message for the month of June, I cannot help but be amazed at how fast this school year has gone! To add to that thought, we are now completing our second year in our new building, which almost at this point the term new starts to seem a little old, particularly when I consider that Grand View PS and Moffat Creek PS, two Cambridge schools that will be opening this fall, will be considered the new kids on the block! We have had an amazing year in 2011-2012 which we are finishing off with a real flurry of activities to cap things off just take a look at the list of events on this page and on your childs classroom calendar! We as a school are growing once again in the coming year, so much so that our predicted population will be around 460 students. This will result in our school increasing in size by 2 more classes (and therefore 2 more portables). We will add 4 more teachers to our staff to help with this increase in classes and support. Another significant change for our school is that the School Board has allocated a full time Vice-Principal to support us at Ryerson. Our new VP for next year is Mrs. Beverlie Stewart. Mrs. Stewart comes to us with a great deal of experience in education from working at the School Board in the city of Windsor. She will visit us for a few days during the month of June to start to get to know us, and she will officially start her new role in the fall. When report cards go home on June 26th, I will include a short note at that time explaining all of the staff additions and changes for the coming year that I am aware of as of that date. Enjoy the ride of June until then! Sincerely, Mr. Peter Berndt

Grade 6 Graduation
Our Grade 6 graduation ceremony will take place in our gym on Thursday, June 28th at 10 am. We are very excited about this event. We have over 40 graduates this year! We invite all to attend this event to celebrate these students accomplishments. We will also recognize some students who have particularly excelled in various aspects of life here at Ryerson from the 4 graduating classes this year. Attire for the graduates is semiformal, while trying to adhere to usual school dress code. Classes from grades 1-5 will also be in attendance. Congratulations Grade 6s! Come on out, bring your camera, take in the ceremony, and enjoy some cake and punch!

Class Lists
Class lists for grades 1 to 6 will be posted on the front entry doors to the school with the teachers name, class number and students first name on Friday, August 31st. Kindergarten class lists have already been created to establish staggered entry days come the first week of school in September.

Ryerson's Radical Play day By Mr. Grant

Ryerson's Radical Playday is taking place this Friday June 8th. This is a whole school activity run by the entire 45 grade 6s at Ryerson. Students from grade 1-5 will be placed in 14 different groups travelling to 15 different stations created by our grade 6s. There are numerous wet and wild activities, including water balloon toss, water blaster shootout, and drip drip drop (duck duck goose). Other activities include a maze, hockey shootout, parachute games, and much much more. Playday will take place in the 4 middle periods, and all students will also receive a freezie at the rest station for a special treat. Please be sure to dress appropriately for the weather, with presumably a hat and sunscreen. Looking forward to another fantastic Ryerson's Radical Playday!

Dress Code
As the hot weather is upon us, so too comes dressing appropriately for dealing with the heat and humidity. We are fortunate that our building and all our portables are air conditioned. With that in mind, a reminder goes out to all families to please review the Dress Code outlined in the front section of your childs planner. Please be reminded that shorts and skirts must be mid-thigh length or longer and shirts must have straps that are 2 finger widths wide. These expectations are created by parents and staff working together to ensure that the learning environment is focused and appropriate for all. Please help ensure that your child is following these dress expectations prior to coming to school. Your support in this area is greatly appreciated.

Kids' Korner
Ryerson`s Leadership Club would love to share some of the exciting things that we have experienced in the last month. Our "Ryerson's Got Talent" donations were taken to a homeless shelter, called The Bridges, by the grade six Leadership Club members. When we went for our visit Gillian, our wonderful tour guide, offered to show us around and tell us some interesting facts that we would like to share. They feed approximately 100 people per night. They have around 40 beds. Also, another great thing about The Bridges is that they have family apartments often used for refugee families. The Leadership Team recently hosted our Jump Rope for Heart assembly by demonstrating our fantastic skipping skills! This Spirit Day was very successful and raised $8850.82 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation! Thank you Ryerson Raptors for supporting Heart and Stroke and stay tuned for prizes arriving soon. The Leadership Team is looking forward to hosting our final spirit day assembly this year, at the end of the month. We hope you are looking forward to Ryerson`s Beach Day too! This year's Leadership Club wishes everyone the best Summer Vacation! Thank you for reading our Kids Korner this year. Thank-you to everyone who has supported School Council activities throughout the year. With your support we were able to raise a little over $11 000 so far this year. This money has allowed us to support the Home Reading program by investing $2000 into new books between the English and French Home Reading programs that we are now supporting with our new French Immersion program. Throughout the year we have provided funding for Literacy Night, Math Night as well as a number of activities for Spirit Days. Finally, we are providing approximately $6000 for the first phase of the playground development, which is scheduled to be completed in time for back to school in September. Going into June, we are gearing up for our final fundraiser. Our Buy a Book program gives you the opportunity to directly support our Home Reading Program as all funds raised from this go directly into the Home Reading Program. This fundraiser gives you the opportunity to show the school that you support our reading program by placing your name in a book on a book plate. If you buy the book plate at Party in the Park, you can fill out the label yourself! In addition, you can use this as an end of year gift for your childs teacher. You will be given a card that can be passed along to their teacher showing that you support the Home Reading Program! We are hoping to provide an additional $2000 for new books for next year, so any support you can provide would be appreciated. We are currently busy planning for projects for next year. Watch for information early in September about how you can get involved with School Council next year! Amy Willard-Brown School Council Chair

School Council Update

Character Education at Ryerson

In May, we focused on the key of FLEXIBILITY. The following students were chosen by their classmates as the person who demonstrated FLEXIBILITY on the most consistent basis:

mily Math Night

Our event on May 17th was well attended with about 80 families participating in a variety of math activities. The early bird attendees received a math tool kit upon arrival and filled it with items at different stations around the gym. There were lots of activities that involved technology such as iPods, Smartboards, and calculators. The beaded number line craft station was well attended and the measuring angles with Angry Birds was a big hit also. Some families used their music smarts to play math music bingo while other families displayed their artistic side drawing tangram chalk doodles outside. Ryerson's 4th annual Family Math Night was a great success thanks to all the wonderful participants. It was a great event and we look forward to next year!
