Sounds in the Barn

by Ellen Gelisanga-Dela Cruz

At dawn, a kind girl named Golden wakes up and gets

out of her soft bed.
She hears different sounds: tweet, arf, moo, oink, cluck,
and bleat...
She folds her warm blanket, pats the soft bed, and thinks
of the day’s task.
She readies herself and drinks cold water from a cold
flask.

She bends and opens the hard heavy window,

And inhales the fresh smell of the morning dew.
She says, “I know what you need, my bold animal friends
from the loud noise, I hear that blend.”

“In a short while, I’ll go out and bring a gift

A small sack of animal feed, with my left hand, I’ll lift.
I’ll cut the duct tape that seals the lid,
And out to the hard basket, its contents shall slid.”

Sounds in the Barn (continued)
by Ellen Gelisanga-Dela Cruz

Asgard barks at a dark shade and runs fast ahead,

While Golden looks at the animals that band along with it.
She sifts the firm grain through her hand,
Grabs a handful and throws it to the chickens as they say,
“cluck, cluck.
Another handful she throws to the next pen as they say,
“quack, quack.”

Golden picks the last pail of animal feed, but her young
cousin, Kenji, says
“Let me do it, Ate Golden! It is my turn to help feed them.”
Over the high walls of their firm pens, the fat pigs noisily
say “Oink…oink…”
In the grassy field, the gentle goats bleat and the bald
cow says “moo…”

“Now listen. I don’t hear the long animal sounds.” Golden

says.
Kenji answers, “Full and sleepy, they all must be.
Tomorrow, let’s do the things we did today,
Together, let’s enjoy feeding the animals each day!”
