DISCUSSION BOOKLET
INTRODUCTION BY MAX LUCADO
I WAS PUTTING THE
INISHING TOUCHES
on my upcoming book, Facing Your Giants (w
Publishing,
November 2006), when I irst heard about the
movie, Facing
the Giants. I was amazed (and delighted) at the
echoes
between the movie and my book. The makers of
Facing the
Giants began with the same question I began
with: what
happens when a person refuses to focus on the
seemingly
unconquerable giants in his or her life and
focuses instead
on the almighty God who does whatever he
pleases? I hope
this movie study guide helps you dig deeper into
some issues
that are very near and dear to my heart.
MAX LUCADO
1. FACING YOUR GIANTS
•
•
•
when you focus on your “giants,” what kind of stumbles do you tend to
take?
how does focusing on God cause your giants to shrink—and tumble?
COACH TAYLOR’S LIFE begins to turn around when he stops looking at his
problems and starts looking at God instead. Max lucado, in his book, facing Your
how is God’s might shown through our weakness?
So you’re smaller and weaker than the giants that
stalk your life. where does your comfort and
conidence lie?
Giants, puts it this way: “focus on giants—you stumble. focus on God—your giants
tumble.”
TRYING TO COME TO TERMS with his own giants, david childers asks his
father, “why would [God] make me so small and weak?” “To
show how mighty he is,” his father answers.

when you lead.”

reminder of the team’s guiding truth: “You’ve got to give
God your best and leave the results to him.”
•
AS COACH TAYLOR’S experience shows, “preparing for rain” means taking some
risks, living beyond your comfort zone.

then live as if you don’t expect
God to answer? If so, why?
consider the things that you’re
praying for now—the big things.
how might you “prepare your
ields” in expectation of God’s
blessing?
It is a huge risk to put david childers in for a 51-yard ield goal. when
asked what he was doing, coach Taylor answers, “I’m preparing for rain.”
what does he mean by that?
The Giants’ coach bobby lee duke takes risks himself—notably, going
how does “preparing for rain” for a touchdown rather than a ield goal at the end of the championship
show more faith than praying for game. how are those risks different from coach Taylor’s “rain-
rain and leaving it at that?
preparation” risks?
do you ever pray for something,
5. WATCHING GOD WORK
•
how has God already shown his strength and goodness in your life? do
you have “milestones” in your life where you clearly saw God at work?
what is impossible with God?
BYALLEARTHLYSTANDARDS, theShilohEaglesshouldn’t
even be on the same ield with the Richland Giants. but for coach
Taylor and his players, the very unlikelihood of their story gave
them hope: it was evidence that God was at work.
