Superstitions began centuries ago when our ancestors tried to explain mysterious circumstances or events as best they could with the knowledge they had.

For instance, before the development of science explained such strange things as why mirrors show our reflections or why shadows appear when its sunny, ancient people reasoned that a shadow or refletion was part of their souls.

Finger Crossed
This is probably the superstition that is most widely used today. By making the sign of the Christian faith with our fingers, evil spirits would be prevented from destroying our chances of good fortune.

To open an umbrella in the house is to bring bad luck.

To break a mirror will bring you seven years bad luck.

The superstition that the finding of a four-leaf clover can bring good luck is so old that its origin is lost in antiquity. One of the oldest legends has it that Eve, upon being ejected from the Garden of Eden, took a fourleaf clover with her. Because the clover was a bit of green from paradise, its presence in one's own garden came to be looked upon as an omen of good luck.

According to some traditions, a young woman seeking a husband should go in search of a four-leaf clover. If she is fortunate enough to find one, she is to eat it. The first unmarried man she encounters after eating the clover will be the one she will wed. Another tradition of gaining a husband or wife is to find a fourleaf clover and place it in one's shoe first thing in the morning. The first unmarried member of the opposite sex encountered that day will be one's future spouse.

Think the names of girls or guys whom you want to marry; then recite the names of each of them while twisting the stem of apple. You will marry the person whose name you were saying when the stem fell off.

Cut the apple into two halves and count the seeds inside it. You will have the number of children similar to the number of seeds in that apple.

The sudden falling of a comb while combing your hair is an indication of coming disappointment.

If cows lift their tails it is an indication of the coming rain.

Dropping scissors on the floor means your lover is unfaithful to you.

If a young girl sees a sparrow on Valentines Day she will marry a poor man and she will be very happy. If she sees a goldfinch, she will marry a millionaire.

If you use the same pencil to take a test that you used for studying to take the test you will get good marks as the pencil remembers the answers.

The settling down of swarm of bees on the roof indicates that the house will burn soon.

Keep a spider in a walnut shell and place it around the neck acts as a repellent against plague.

To sew a swans feather into the husbands pillow enhances the commitment.
