Definition and Types of Ring Worms


Ring worm or Tinea is a fungal skin infection which affects the skin and are usually problem of appearance other than illness. Tinea capitis (ring worm of the scalp) Tinae corporis(ring worm of the body) Tinea pedis(ring worm of the foot) Tinea unguium(ring worm of the nails)

Mode of transmission
Ring worm are spread by direct or indirect contact through sharing clothes,comb,and being in close contact with active lesson.

Presentation of Ring worm


Tinea capitis (Ring worm of the Scalp) begins as a small papule which spreads to involve a larger area, hair become weak and break off easily. It occurs in children below 10years and disappears during puberty Tinea corporis is characterized by flat- shaped spreading lesions, reddish, vascular, and may be dry and scaly. The central area clears leaving normal skin.

Tinea pedis is characterized by scaling and cracking of the skin between the toes ,particularly the 4th and 5th toe.

Management
All patients with fungal skin disease should be given Health Education on personal hygiene for example scrubbing with water and soap. Application of fungicidal drugs like cotrimazole 1% for 3 weeks.

Prevention
Avoid the infection by not coming into contact with suspicious lesions. Wearing loose fitting clothes. Dry off completely after bathing. Examine all family members for any signs of Tinea to avoid re-infection. Mass school treatment is done in case of an out break. Carry out health Education in both Schools and at the Health facility on personal hygiene.

Public Health Importance


Rough and ugly skin. It is shameful to be in pubic. Some become resistant to treatment. Leads to absenteeism of children in schools. Leading to poor performance at school.

ACNE DISEASE
Is a disease that affects the skin oil glands. The holes in the skin connect to oil glands which makes a substance subum.It affects the face, neck, back,chest,and shoulder.

Epidemiology
It is the most common skin disease and people of all races and ages get Acne disease. It is most common in teenagers and young adults. An estimates of 80% of all people between the ages of 11 and30 years have Acne outbreak. People of forties and fifties still get Acne.

Causes of Acne
Hereditary(if the parents had the Acne disease you might get it too). Hormones during pregnancy bring about some changes in the body. . Starting and stopping birth control pills. Hormones increase in teenage years(this can cause the oil glands to plug up more often). Greasy makeup's make the oil glands to plug up.

Clinical Presentation
The hair, sebum, and skin cells clump together in to a plug. Bacteria in the plug cause swelling, then the plug stars to break down and a pimple grows.

Types of Acne
White heads.These are pimples that stays under the surface of the skin. Black heads.These are pimples that rise to the surface of skin and look black. Papules.Thes are small pink bumps that can be tender. Pustles are pimples that are red at the bottom has pus on top. Nodules.Large,painful,solid pimples that are deep in the skin. Cyst are deep, painful, us-filled pimples that can cause scars.

Prevention
Clean skin gently with a mild cleanser in the morning, evening and after heavy work. Try not to touch your skin. people who squeeze,pinch,or pick their pimples get scars or dark spot on the skin. Shave carefully with sharp blade and lightly when necessary(safety razors). After applying medine,stay out of the sun because it is likely to sunburn. Choose makeup's carefully because they should be oil free and should have(noncomedogenic)on the label.

Public Health Importance


It is very expensive to treat. It can result in to skin cancer if one uses wrong make ups. Makes the patient feel uncomfortable hence interferes with the work. It makes the body look ugly because it becomes rough.
