This is a view of the Media Center as you enter the double doors.
There is also another door located directly to the right at the end of the computer table.

Students come in and turn in any due books in the book return to the left of the picture. They then take a seat at one of the tables located straight ahead. (not pictured above) The student Self-Checkout Station is located directly under the flag.

There are four student computers available in the media center. Currently, their main use is Web Safari (card cataloging system).
Students are allowed to use these for research only if a class is not in the media center for their checkout time. However, there is a computer lab that teachers can reserve for their classes. This is not affiliated with the media center, and is done on a first-come first-serve basis.

View from the Circulation Desk

The media specialists office is located behind the circulation desk. It has two large windows that face the media center. The media specialist and clerk have a full line of sight throughout the entire library due to the short shelving in the middle of the room. This is where the Easy Fiction and Easy Nonfiction books are located.

Reference Area
This is also an area that houses a teacher/volunteer computer and printer. Students are not permitted to enter this area unless their class is completing a research project.

Storage for videos, teacher materials and other resources.

Videos are located on the shelves that line the walls in both rooms. Book study sets, butcher paper for teachers, and a sink are located in one room while audio and visual equipment and math manipulatives are in the other. Both rooms tend to get very unorganized throughout the year, and many things are no longer used and/or outdated.

Area where grades K-2 receive story time.

This area also serves as a place for book fair (as seen in this picture).

A survey was given to faculty members regarding the schools media center. The following bullets summarize the results.

Indicated Areas of Strength:

The Media Specialist keeps staff informed of resources available to them. The Media Specialist assists others in locating materials in the media center when requested.

Suggested Areas of Improvement:

Media Center availability Media Center setting/environment (clutter)

1. Eliminate clutter on the bookshelves. 2. Create a more inviting story time area. 3. Consolidate teacher resources to one location. 4.Make reference materials accessible to students.

1. Eliminate clutter on the bookshelves.

The items on the bookshelves is very cluttered and appears messy to students and faculty. By eliminating these items, one will not feel overwhelmed when entering the media center.

2. Create a more inviting story time area.

Purchase furniture and pillows to make the independent reading area more inviting.
Kiddie Couch Price: $100.00 each www.schoolbox.com

Floor Cushions Price: $74.95 per each set of 4 www.schoolbox.com

Floor Pillows Price: $259.95 per each set of 4 www.schoolbox.com

3. Consolidate teacher resources to one location.

Many items that are located in the resource areas for the teachers are outdated, and some are never used. By clearing out and purging these items and consolidating the remaining items into one room, the first room will be made accessible for students to use as a study area, or for a classroom centered around media center activities. This room could also be used for conferences and faculty trainings and/or meetings.

4.Make reference materials accessible to students.

By opening up the reference center and making it accessible at all times, students will feel more comfortable researching in the media center. They will not have to interrupt what is going on in the media center to be able to use the materials located there. A set of computers, in addition to the already purchased card catalog computers, should also be made accessible at all times for students to conduct research.
