-words repetition -simple & direct -legible print -thought lower case letters first then upper case letters.

Aims of Teaching Reading


Help pupils to become independent readers. -teach them how & when to use dictionary
Develop response to text -ask them questions Help pupils read with adequate understanding -tell them to understand only what is important for his purpose

Helps pupils to read at appropriate speed -teacher needs to get texts that pupils can read comfortably Help pupils read silently -we read a lot faster when we read silently as our mind and eyes work a lot faster than our mouth

Semantic Mapping -Create a chart that has the targeted teaching vocabulary word in the centre with 4 boxes around it -Each box has a different activity associated with word Index Card Vocabulary Game -Label index cards with the words requiring direct teaching -Front-the word -Back-information about the word -Distribute to students and ask them to find their pairs among their friends

Teaching Word Parts -Teach part of words such as the root, prefixes and suffixes

Activities for Teaching Vocabulary

Figures of Speech: Teaching Idioms -Using a pocket chart, show the students a card with an idiom written on it. -Discuss with the students what they think the idiom means Then, write a sentence on the board to explain the meaning

Example or Not -Write a word on the board, read with students and discuss -Ask them for examples of what the word means -show pictures that represent examples of the word and pictures that show the opposite of the word
