Phrases of Time Sequence
 Phrases of time sequence are used
to connect ideas and show the
order of events in a story.
For example, in the sentence
‘One morning, Jon woke from his sleep.’

The phrase ‘one morning’ tells us the

point in time when Jon woke up.

A comma is used to separate the two parts of

the sentence.
The sentence can be written as:

Jon woke up from his sleep one

morning.

In this case, there is no need to put a

comma in the sentence.
To show something that happens after that,
we can use phrases like -
 Later that morning
 Later that afternoon
 Later that evening
 Soon after that
 Not long after

For example,
Later that morning, he had a fall.

Again, we use a comma to

separate the two parts in the
sentence.
 The sentence can also be written as:

He had a fall later that morning.

In this case, there is no need to place

a comma in the sentence.
To show an event that happens after that day,
other phrases of time sequence can be used.

Examples are:
 From that day on

 A week later

 One month passed

 From then on
When these phrases are used in a passage,
they show the passing of time. The passage
below is an example to show this.

One morning, Jon woke up

from his sleep. He rushed to
school after that. Later that
morning, he had a bad fall in
school. A week passed and his
injury healed. From then on, he
was more careful.
