Web Directory

A web directory is a directory on the World Wide Web that

specializes in linking to other web sites and categorizing those
links.

The categorization is usually based on the whole web site, rather

than one page or a set of keywords, and sites are often limited to
inclusion in only one or two categories.
Web Directory

A web directory is not a search engine. It lists web sites by

category and subcategory.

Web directories often allow site owners to directly submit their

site for inclusion, and have editors review submissions for fitness.
Directory Listing Types

Directories have various types of listings. They are listed as

follows:

1. Free Submission - there is no charge for the review and listing

of the site

2. Reciprocal Link - a link back to the directory must be added

somewhere on the submitted site in order to get listed in the
directory
Directory Listing Types

3. Paid Submissions - a one-time or recurring fee is charged for

reviewing/listing the submitted link

4. Featured Listing - the link is given a premium position in a

category (or multiple categories) or other sections of the
directory, such as the homepage
Choosing a Directory for Submission

1. Find out if the directory is indexed by the topmost search

engines. If it has not been cached by search engines for a long
period of time, there is definitely no point in submitting your links
on it.
2. Established, popular directories can bring in traffic and also
the kind of back links that'll actually foster your site's
optimization process.

3. When you submit your site into categories, make sure that the
directory offers a well categorized structure that helps in better
organization of information. This will help you in locating
relevant information in quick time.
Choosing a Directory for Submission

4. Before submitting your website, check the number of links

(pages) in the category. It will be better if it’s less than 100.

5. If a directory uses the 'rel=no follow' attribute for your link,

search engines will actually never follow that link to your site.
Therefore, such a directory will be of absolutely no help in your
optimization process.
Web Directory Types

1) General (Common directories having all categories)

2) Niche (Service or website theme related - E.g.: Shopping,

Sports, etc.,)

3) .org (Having extension .org)

4) Regional (Country specific)

5) Deep Link (Allows inner page submissions)

Directory Submission Guidelines

Step 1:

Do not submit mirror sites. Mirror sites are sites that contain
identical content, but have different URLs.

Sites with overlapping and repetitive content are not helpful to

users of the directory. Multiple submissions of the same or
related sites may result in the exclusion and/or deletion of those
and all affiliated sites.
Directory Submission Guidelines

Step 1: (Continued…)

Do not disguise your submission and submit the same URL more
than once.
Example: http://www.dmoz.org and
http://www.dmoz.org/index.html

Do not submit any site with an address that redirects to another

address.
Directory Submission Guidelines

Step 1: (Continued…)
The Web Directory has a policy against the inclusion of sites with
illegal content. Examples of illegal material include child
pornography; libel; material that infringes any intellectual
property right; and material that specifically advocates, solicits or
abets illegal activity (such as fraud or violence).

Do not submit sites "under construction." Wait until a site is

complete before submitting it. Sites that are incomplete, contain
"Under Construction" notices, or contain broken graphics or links
aren't good candidates for the directory.
Directory Submission Guidelines

Step 1: (Continued…)

Submit pornographic sites to the appropriate category under Adult.

Submit non-English sites to the appropriate category under World.

Don't submit sites consisting largely of affiliate links.

Directory Submission Guidelines

Step 2:

Do a quick search in the directory to be sure that your site isn't

already listed. This saves your time.
Directory Submission Guidelines

Step 3:

Identify the single best category for your site. The Web
Directory has an enormous array of subjects to choose from. You
should submit a site to the single most relevant category. Sites
submitted to inappropriate or unrelated categories may be
rejected or removed.

Note: Some categories do not have "suggest URL" or "update

URL" links. These categories don't accept submissions, so you
should find a more specific category for your site.
Directory Submission Guidelines

Step 4:

Once you've selected the best category for your site, go directly
to that category on the directory and then click "suggest / add
URL." Follow the instructions on the submission form carefully.

E.g.: http://www.dmoz.org/cgi-
bin/add.cgi?where=Computers/Companies/Software_Developme
nt

Tips:

1. Selection of right category is most important. You must

submit to the applicable category. This is the most overlooked,
because we think we have a site selling Sporting Goods, like
http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/ and they wanted to be
listed into the “Sports” category. For that it is best to be
submitted into the “Shopping: Sports: Theme Merchandise”
category. If it would have been submitted into the root of
Sports, we can GUARANTEE it would have not been
accepted.
Tips:

2. Use appropriate title and description.

3 Do NOT submit your site to a directory again in a month.

Few sites may accept this.Give some months time to see
results. If after 2 months, you are not listed, rethink your
submission, drill down to a deeper, more relevant category, and
resubmit.

4. Keep track of your submissions, check your approval status

on a regular basis.

5. Document your work for future reference.

Documentation:

The documentation file must contain the following fields

(make sure to save the file with .xls extension)

1. S.No
2. Directory URL
3. PageRank
4. Title (Anchor Text)
5. Category Name / URL
6. Status (Pending / Approved)
Points To Remember

1. Check whether the directory you are going to submit, has

been indexed already in major search engines.

2. Don't select the directories over PageRank. Many low PR

directories will drive more traffic than high PR directories.
Do not obsess over PageRank.
Points To Remember

3. Look on forums for new directory announcements.

Digital point forums is my favorite. It has a section where
people advertise their directories. Often the directories are
sometimes not the best of quality, but the one good thing is
fast approval; the webmasters of these sites are usually
very active in accepting new submissions.

4. Make sure to include the keywords you are trying to

target in your anchor text, but do not make them spammy.
Do not use the same description and anchor text for every
link. Try to change it around a bit and target different
keywords.
Points To Remember

5. Always aim for one way links and avoid paying for links.

6. Don't submit in directories that approve the sites without

reviewing them manually and use some automated scripts
to do the same.
