WHAT IS ITS CURRENT CONSERVATION STATUS (ACCORDING TO THE IUCN)

WHAT ARE SCIENTISTS/ VOLUNTARY ORGANIZATIONS/ POLITICIANS/ ENVIRONMENTALISTS DOING TO CONSERVE THE SPECIES?
In order to ensure the survival of the clouded leopard, significant efforts are being made to breed and maintain healthy captive populations. Through the Clouded Leopard Species Survival Plan (SSP), the American Zoo and Aquarium Association currently administers the collective management of all clouded leopards in North American zoos (11). Unfortunately, captive-breeding is proving problematic for this species, due to male aggression, decreased breeding activity and high cub mortality. Nevertheless, a partnership between the Smithsonian National Zoo, the Nashville Zoo, the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand, and the clouded leopard SSP is working to develop a clouded leopard breeding program in Thai zoos. It is hoped that this international collaboration will help to overcome captive-breeding difficulties and inspire further conservation efforts for this imperilled species (12).

WHAT OBSTACLES DO THEY FACE WITH THEIR CONSERVATION WORK?

clouded leopards are snared accidentally in traps set for other species.

HABITAT AND ECOLOGY

The clouded leopard spends most of the time in the tropical evergreen rainforests but can also be found in dry tropical forests and mangrove swamps. It has also been found at relatively high altitudes in the Himalayas.

WHAT

IS DOING

To protect clouded leopards and other big cats in Bhutan, WWF and local wildlife authorities are working together to establish anti-poaching units and strengthen antipoaching law enforcement.

DID YOU KNOW?

The clouded leopard has proportionately the largest canine teeth of any member of the feline family. In 2007 it was found that the clouded leopard on Borneo is a different species to its relative on the Asian mainland. The clouded leopard can climb while hanging upside-down under branches and descend tree trunks head-first.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
It does have an exceptionally long tail for balancing, which can be as long as the body
itself, thick with black ring markings.

The clouded leopard has a stocky build and, proportionately, the longest canine teeth of
any living feline.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
The clouded leopard is a medium-sized cat, 60 to 110 cm long and weighing between 11 and 20kg.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
The clouded leopard is named after the distinctive 'clouds' on its coat - ellipses partially
edged in black, with the insides a darker colour than the background colour of the pelt.

The base of the fur is a pale yellow to rich brown, making the darker cloud-like markings
look even more distinctive.

The limbs and underbelly are marked with large black ovals, and the back of its neck is
conspicuously marked with two thick black bars.
