Overview about THE LEGEND

Born on: 12 June 1932 in palghat dist. Kerala Studied at the Victoria College in palghat Graduate as an engineer from the government engineering college, Kakinada Short tenure as a lecturer in civil engineering at the Kerala polytechnic in Kozhikode A year at the Bombay port trust as an apprentice, He joined the Indian Railways in its service of engineers, through a nation-wide selection procedure, in the southern railway as a probationary assistant engineer in December 1954

He was appointed the CMD of konkan Railway on contract in 1990. under his stewardship, the company executed its mandate in seven years. He was made the managing director of Delhi metro and by mid-2005, all the scheduled sections were completed by their target date or before and within their respective budgets. Most of his working life he was yet another unknown engineer with the railways, until he took up the challenge of building the Konkan Railway that reduced the Mumbai-Kochi distance by one-third

Most of his working life he was yet another unknown engineer with the railways, until he took up the challenge of building the Konkan Railway that reduced the Mumbai-Kochi distance by onethird Everybody gave the usual reasons why new infrastructure cant be build in INDIA. He defied them all and built Indias first, genuine railway project of any notable size after the British. When the government was short of money, he raised public bonds and that was a decade ago when such things were unprecedented. The Konkan Railway is to Indian infrastructure what the Mohali stadium is to Indian cricket.

Focus and passion. Probably these are the keywords. But when he is asked about the mantra of success, Sreedharan again downplays his role. I have been lucky enough to pick up the right people for the right job, he says. He has achieved all he has by the application of some commonplace values -discipline, punctuality and honesty-and the introduction of a new work culture. Instilled a sense of corporate culture in DMRC project. His insistence on deadlines had earned him 20 transfers in the early years of his career.

Is Dr. E. Sreedharan a ideal leader??

1) VISION: He believed that one day he could give delhi a world- class metro rail project and change the meaning of urban transport in india. And that is exactly what he has done.

2) Punctuality & Passionate He clocks in at work on the dot at 08:45 (IST) every morning, 15 minutes before his staff. And admits that he is not a workaholic but he simply like his job. 3) Optimum utilization of resources He completed a big task within the given time and also the given budget.

4) Devoted to work For him, the job at hand is not just duty but also his dharma. (Bureaucratic red tape tried to delay his work, contracts would not meet commitments and corruption threatened to slow him down.)
5) Willpower (courageous) Sreedharan never lost hope. Never lost the belief that one day he could give Delhi a world-class metro rail project and change the meaning of urban transport in India. And that is exactly what he has done.

6) Empathy and motivation

The employees attribute DMRCs success to Dr. Sreedharans amiable and conducive working environment of the organisation. (They were told that, because there was no fear of disciplinary action, employees are encouraged to utilize their potential to the maximum.)

He is not just a dreamer but also a builder, but most of all one who has dedicated his achievements to every indian. It took them 190 km and 14 years to muster the courage to let him go. And yet, two weeks before E Sreedharan quits as managing director, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), their trepidation is palpable. The question is not whether Phase III of the Delhi Metro will be completed by its deadline 2016. The question is whether it will be done the Sreedharan way.

The Shreedharan Way for policy makers

Redefine the context-Benchmark yourself against the prevalent system and you'll land with moderate success. It will not measure up to the grandeur of a Delhi Metro Focus on goals and not Politics- Shore up your perseverance and prepare for maximum resistance, especially by political expediencies
