EVACUEES
An evacuation journey often began with a walk to school. Then it was off in buses to the station where special trains were waiting. It was quite exciting for some , but most of the children felt sad when they waved goodbye to their mothers as the train chugged away , often the journey took several hours.

Teachers sent letters home telling parents what to pack when they sent their children away. Things like ; Strong walking shoes , Washing things , Clean clothes and their favourite book. Children were sent from cities to places where there was less risk of bombing and air raids. Many children were sent to Devon , Cornwall and Whales. Pinned to the children's coats were labels. On the labels were the child's name , home address , school and where he/she is going. Some country children called town evacuees were called skinnies , why do you think that is?

Rationing was introduced in the 1940s and it lasted for 14 years and ended on the 4th July 1954. People were given coupons to receive food and ensure that everybody had the same amount of food , rich or poor. Also boys at school had to dig for food like potatoes and some people considered food rationing was very unfair. Children helped in the war by recycling their old toys and games. It made lots of children suffer and as a result of that it made them very skinny.
