ACTUARY
Where Do You Work?
For the most part, actuaries work for large insurance companies or for actuarial consulting firms. Some work for financial services companies or government departments. Depending on the size and type of project, actuaries may work alone, or on a team with other actuaries. In addition to having contact with their clients, they may have contact with a wide range of other professionals, such as accountants, lawyers, and businesspeople.

HOW MUCH MONEY CAN YOU MAKE?

Because of their specialized talents, actuaries are wellpaid. The salary for an entry-level actuary who has completed the first level of exams ranges from about $40,000 to $50,000 a year. To receive higher pay, they must continue to study for and pass the remainder of the difficult qualifying exams. An actuary who has passed all of the associate-level exams can expect to make between $65,000 and $80,000 a year. Passing the fellowship-level exams could mean an annual salary somewhere between $80,000 and $100,000, or more. Those who reach the management level can earn over $150,000 a year.

WHAT POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION DO YOU REQUIRE?

Start by taking math courses, particularly calculus and algebra, in high school. Courses in economics, commerce, and business administration are also useful. To become a lawyer, you must attend law school and complete a law degree. Before applying to law school, you must complete at least 2 years of undergraduate studies at university (except in Quebec, where you can get into law school straight from a CEGEP).
