We can control climate change

Climate Change is a global problem, and yet each
one of us has the power to make a difference. Even
small changes in our daily behavior can help prevent
greenhouse gas emissions without affecting our
quality of life. In fact, they can help save us money.
Taking the time to flip a simple switch or turn off
your tap may seem insignificant, but if everyone
took the time to do it every day, the results would
be considerable. Review these tips for ways to
incorporate energy-saving measures into your
everyday routine.
Although individual decisions may seem small in the
face of global threats and trends, when billions of
people join forces in common purpose, we can make
a tremendous difference.
Most important contributor to global warming, carbon
dioxide pollution has reached levels the Earth has not
experienced in three to five million years.
Extreme weather events (storms, floods, and heat
waves) become more frequent and intense, along with
rising temperatures and sea levels. New York City
Mayor Michael Bloomberg has proposed a $20 billion
storm surge protection plan for that one city alone.
International Energy Agency says we are headed
toward an increase in global temperatures of 6.5 F to
9.5 F, most of it during the lives of young people alive
today.
Almost every scientific paper on global warming in the
last 20 years 97 percent agrees it is mainly caused
by human activities, like using coal and oil for energy.

Some facts and figures
The production of one kilogram of beef requires 15 thousand litres of
water (93% green, 4% blue, 3% grey water footprint). There is a huge
variation around this global average. The precise footprint of a piece of
beef depends on factors such as the type of production system and the
composition and origin of the feed of the cow.
The water footprint of a 150-gram soy burger produced in the
Netherlands is about 160 litres. A beef burger from the same country
costs about 1000 litres.
The water footprint of Chinese consumption is about 1070 cubic
meter per year per capita. About 10% of the Chinese water footprint
falls outside China.
Japan with a footprint of 1380 cubic meter per year per capita, has
about 77% of its total water footprint outside the borders of the country.
The water footprint of US citizens is 2840 cubic meter per year per
capita. About 20% of this water footprint is external. The largest
external water footprint of US consumption lies in the Yangtze river
basin, China.
The global water footprint in the period 1996-2005 was 9087 Gm3/yr
(74% green, 11% blue, 15% grey). Agricultural production contributes
92% to this total footprint.
Water scarcity affects over 2.7 billion people for at least one month
each year.
The vast amount of food going to landfills makes a significant contribution to global warming.
Roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year
approximately 1.3 billion tonnes gets lost or wasted.
Every year, consumers in rich countries waste almost as much food (222 million tonnes) as the entire
net food production of sub-Saharan Africa (230 million tonnes).
The amount of food lost or wasted every year is equivalent to more than half of the world's annual
cereals crop (2.3 billion tonnes in 2009/2010).
Food loss and waste also amount to a major squandering of resources, including water, land, energy,
labour and capital and needlessly produce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to global warming
and climate change.
In developing countries food waste and losses occur mainly at early stages of the food value chain and
can be traced back to financial, managerial and technical constraints in harvesting techniques as well
as storage and cooling facilities. Thus, a strengthening of the supply chain through the support
farmers and investments in infrastructure, transportation, as well as in an expansion of the food and
packaging industry could help to reduce the amount of food loss and waste.
In medium- and high-income countries food is wasted and lost mainly at later stages in the supply
chain. Differing from the situation in developing countries, the behavior of consumers plays a huge part
in industrialized countries. Moreover, the study identified a lacking coordination between actors in the
supply chain as a contributing factor. Farmer-buyer agreements can be helpful to increase the level of
coordination. Additionally, raising awareness among industries, retailers and consumers as well as
finding beneficial use for save food that is presently thrown away are useful measures to decrease the
amount of losses and waste.
In the United States 30% of all food, worth US$48.3 billion (32.5 billion), is thrown away each year. It
is estimated that about half of the water used to produce this food also goes to waste, since agriculture
is the largest human use of water. (Jones, 2004 cited in Lundqvist et al., 2008)
United Kingdom households waste an estimated 6.7 million tonnes of food every year, around one third
of the 21.7 million tonnes purchased. This means that approximately 32% of all food purchased per
year is not eaten. Most of this (5.9 million tonnes or 88%) is currently collected by local authorities.
Most of the food waste (4.1 million tonnes or 61%) is avoidable and could have been eaten had it been
better managed (WRAP, 2008; Knight and Davis, 2007).
In the USA, organic waste is the second highest component of landfills, which are the largest source of
methane emissions.

There are 41 wards in CCC. Of the wards, tube wells at 13
wards are arsenic contaminated, the research said. The level of
arsenic contamination is more than 0.5 ppm in East
Sholoshahar (Ward-6), South Kattoli (Ward-11), and North
Halishahar (Ward-26) areas while arsenic level at West Bakolia
(Ward-17) is 0.4 ppm and South Bakolia (Ward-19) is 0.3 ppm
in the waters of shallow tube wells, the survey report
added. According to the survey, arsenic contamination in the
waters of South Agrabad (Ward-27) is 0.06 ppm, at Boxir Hat
(Ward-35) is 0.06 ppm, at North Middle Halishahar (Ward-38) is

A village in Chad, women are breaking apart

As of 2011, 1.3 billion tons of food, about one third
of global food production, are lost or wasted annually.
There are nearly one billion malnourished people
in the world, but the approximately 40 million tons
of food wasted by US households, retailers and
food services each year would be enough to satisfy
the hunger of every one of them

Food or any resource
Junk food is food with a lot of fat or sugar, or both;
chips or other fried foods. Junk food is not good
for your body; it's either fattening or it can make
you really sick however, you should keep in mind
that all non junk foods are healthy
Harmful Effects of Junk Food
The regular consumption of junk food is the leading factor in obesity
Obesity is second only to smoking as a cause of death in America.
46% of Canadian adults are either overweight or obese,
Consumption of soft drinks containing sugar has been linked to weight gain
and an increased risk for development of type 2 diabetes.
Studies have revealed that obese people have twice the rate of chronic health
problems as people of normal weight. This includes a 100% greater chance of
developing Type 2 diabetes, 50% increased likelihood of developing heart
disease. Obese men are nearly 90% more likely to get colon cancer.
Junk food diet is a major cause of heart diseases.
High cholesterol resulting from junk food puts undue strain on the liver,
causing long-term damage to this essential organ.
Research has suggested that diets high in fat may also impair essential brain
functions, like concentration and memory.

Food waste or food loss is food that is discarded or lost
uneaten. As of 2011, 1.3 billion tons of food, about one
third of the global food production, are lost or wasted
annually. Loss and wastage occurs on all steps in the food
supply chain. In low-income countries, most loss occurs
during production, while in developed countries much
food about 100 kilograms (220 lb) per person and year
is wasted at the consumption stage.
