If the fine would reach $ 9 billion the biggest French bank
would see them self's loose the equivalent to one tenth
of its reserves, a big amount when the banks will soon
undergo stress tests by the ECB.
2. A damaged reputation
U.S. officials have threaten to remove the access to
make transactions in dollars.
The dollar being the reference currency of
international trade, Paribas would lose part of its
international clientele if they could not use it, even
temporarily.
3. Loss of revenue for the state
In France, the fine could have an impact on the tax paid
by BNP Paribas. It is a major contributor to corporation
tax.
4. The economic recovery at risk
Losing capital would significantly cut off BNP Paribas
ability to lend to its customers, since the new rules of the
sector determine the level of credit to the amount of
capital.
The BNP is one of the largest banks in the euro zone
and is essential for the European economic recovery.
