Definition of computer virus

A virus is a piece of software designed and written
to adversely affect the computer altering the way it
works without our knowledge and permission.

Virus is a segment of program code that implants
itself to one of the executable files and spreads
systematically from one file to another file.
Characteristics of Computer
Virus

Set of computer instruction
Deliberately created
Propagate using host programs
Do undesirable things (damage)

Effects of Computer Virus

Computer runs slower than usual.
Original folders on your computer is hidden and is
replaced with virus files.
Computer suddenly restart or crash, and this
happens a few minutes.
Duplication of names there are folders inside the
folder.

Hard drive or disk drive inaccessible.
It often happens that strange error messages and do
not usually.
Computers are often stopped or not responding.
Computer applications are not running properly and
often error.

Types of computer virus

Resident (indirect action)
This broad virus definition applies to any virus that inserts
itself into a systems memory. It then may take any number of
actions and run independently of the file that was originally
infected.
Non-resident (direct)
This type of virus, unlike most, only comes into action when
the file containing the virus is executed. The payload is
delivered and then the virus essentially becomes dormant it
takes no other action unless an infected file is executed again.

Boot Sector Virus
Boot sector viruses became popular because of the use of floppy
disks to boot a computer. The widespread usage of the Internet and
the death of the floppy has made other means of virus transmission
more effective.
Browser Hijacker
This type of virus, which can spread itself in numerous ways
including voluntary download, effectively hijack certain browser
functions, usually in the form of re-directing the user automatically
to particular sites.

File Injector Virus
The virus may completely overwrite the file that it infects,
or may only replace parts of the file., or may not replace
anything but instead re-write the file so that the virus is
executed rather than the program the user intended.
Macro Virus
A wide variety of programs, including productivity
applications like MS Excel or the document using a
specific macro programming language. Unfortunately, this
makes it possible for a virus to be hidden inside a
seemingly benign document.

Multipartite Virus
A virus of this type may spread in multiple ways, and it may take
different actions on an infected computer depending on variables,
such as the operating system installed or the existence of certain files.

Polymorphic Virus
The Polymorphic virus actually mutates over time or after every
execution, changing the code used to deliver its payload.
Alternatively, or in addition, a Polymorphic virus may guard itself
with an encryption algorithm that automatically alters itself when
certain conditions are met.

Web Scripting Virus
Many websites execute complex code in order to provide interesting
content.
This code can sometimes be exploited, making it possible for a virus
to infect a computer or take actions on a computer through a
website.
Many such cases of virus exist because of code inserted into a site
without the webmasters knowledge.
Most Popular Computer Viruses

C-Brain virus
Amjad and basit. Two Pakistani brothers, developed this
software in January 1986 to Stop people from buying illegal
softwar. This was the most famous virus and has a record of
damaging of few million of personal computer.

Macmag
This virus attacked apple Macintosh computer only. Not much
damage is reported because of this virus. This was not noticed on any
IBM PCs. It display a message on the monitor and killed itself.

Scores
This virus also was found only on apple Macintosh computers. This
virus was first found in march 1987. it affected mainly two
programmes within Electronic data system crop. The scores virus
causes printing problem, damage to excel files.

Friday the 13
th

This Virus is a time bomb virus, this virus get attached to. EXE or
.COM files. On any Friday which falls on the 13
th
of the month it
removes the infected files from the disk. The affected computers can
be slow down.

Happy birthday Joshi
This infects the partition or boot sector, prints a prompt happy
birthday. on the screen when it strikes. This may cause a lot of
damage to data files. sometimes it may not allow even starting up of
computer.

Stones

This is also a partition table or boot sector virus and on striking it
produces a message your pc is stoned. This also cause damage to
data file and may not allow the system to be started sometimes.

Cascade
Cascade virus affected IBM PCs. The letters on the screen could be
seen dropping vertically down to the bottom of the screen after the
virus picked them off in alphabetical order.
Protecting Computer from Virus
Be sure do a full back up of your system on a regular
basis. The best way to clean up an infected file is to
replace it with an original non-infected file.
Always use an anti-virus software program New
viruses are produced daily, so it's important to have
software that can detect the latest threat.
Using an updated anti-virus program, scan all new
software for viruses before installing them on your
hard drive.

Conti

Update the virus database in your anti-virus program
regularly.
Don't allow your web browser to automatically run
programs, such as MS Word or other programs through its
e-mail program.
