I interviewed my grandpa
Using the information from your survey, what differences did you notice between what they
used and your family uses?
I noticed they didnt have lots of household appliances, computers or electronic
entertainment.
What is an advantage and a disadvantage for us by having all these things available now?
We have plenty of entertainment that would last us a day at least. We also have better
household appliances.
We can be absorbed in technology for hours and you could watch YouTube while eating TV
snacks which would be very unhealthy.
What is an advantage and a disadvantage for them, by not having all those things when
they were your age?
They would be much healthier and fitter than us as they wouldnt have an IPad to watch
YouTube on.
They wouldnt have as good household appliances as us so they would spend more time
washing something.
If there was a power strike next week and you were able to use only five electrical
appliances, which would you REALLY choose and why?
Toaster
Oven
TV
Dishwasher
Washing Machine
Research these words and rewrite their meaning so you can understand what they
mean.
Conductor: A material like metal that allows electricity to pass through it.
Insulator: A material that prevents or reduces passage of electricity.
Voltage: The amount of electricity in volts.
Parallel circuit: Two or more devices connected to the same circuit that have their own
branch of wires.
If there was no electricity, how would you:
Cook your food: Over your fire
Wash your dishes: Heat water over fire then use for dishes
Make the toast: Over the fire
Bake a cake: Gas stove
Store food for the summer: Store things underground
Wash your clothes: Heat water over fire then use for washing or do cold wash
Keep warm in winter: Fireplace
Have light in your house: Candles
Entertain yourself: Board games and outside games
Get a weather report: Newspaper
Take a hot shower: Heat water using a fire which then you could store for a shower
Communicate with a friend across town: Walk to them/ send letter

How does it work?
Nuclear power plants generate energy by boiling water into steam. This
steam turns turbines to generate electricity.
The difference is that nuclear plants dont burn anything. They use
uranium fuel consisting of solid ceramic pellets to produce electricity
through a process called fission.
What are the benefits and negatives of this energy source?
It doesnt burn anything.
Leaves clean air
Explosions, fires and leaks can release large quantities of radioactive
particles which can cause cancer
The most concentrated areas of radioactive particles will have to be
kept away from for thousands of years.
Is this a viable energy option?
I would say it is because the positives are good for the environment and
the negatives are quite avoidable.
How does it work?
Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity. It is either using photovoltaics or using
concentrated solar power systems. Photovoltaics are a method of generating power from
sunlight using conductors that exhibit the photovoltaic effect. The photovoltaic effect is the
creation of an electric current in a material upon exposure to light. Concentrated solar power
systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small
beam.
What are the benefits and negatives of this energy source?
Solar energy does not cause pollution.
Can be used in remote areas where it costs too much to extend the power grid.
Solar energy is infinite
It is free though there is a cost for the equipment
Solar energy can only be harnessed when it is day time and sunny
Solar collectors, panels and cells are relatively expensive
In countries like the UK where the climate is unreliable, solar energy is then unreliable too

How does it work?
The wind flows over the blades creating lift, like the effect on airplane wings, which
makes them turn. The blades are connected to a drive shaft that turns an electric
generator to produce electricity.
What are the benefits and negatives of this energy source?
Does not cause greenhouse gases or pollution
Take up a small plot of land
Remote areas that are not connected to the power grid can use this to generate their
own electricity
Does not produce power when there is no wind
When wind turbines are manufactured they cause pollution
Large wind farms are required to generate enough electricity for a community
Is it a viable energy option?
I would say yes as it does not produce pollution which is what everyone likes to hear.
Is it a viable energy option?
Yes because when you have the equipment the
power is free. It is also great for the environment.
Hazards
1. I could get overloaded sockets
2. I have the IPad charger near the sink which would
be a hazard if water went near it
3. I could accidentally touch a switch with wet hands
which would conduct the electricity
4. I have the toaster near a cupboard. If something
were to fall out and get stuck in the toaster it would
be a hazard
5. I have a cracked switch near the toaster
Preventions
1. Dont plug too many devices into one
power point
2. Charge the IPad somewhere else
3. Make sure hands are dry before
touching switches
4. Make sure cupboard is closed
properly or use toaster elsewhere
5. Get a licensed electrician in to fix it
and dont use it in the meantime
Hazards
1. On my front lawn I have a tree which in a few
years could touch the power lines
2. Sometimes mum leaves the deep fryer outside
because she cant stand the smell inside. It could be
a hazard if it rains and some water gets on the
extension cord
3. Carrying a ladder around power lines can actually
be dangerous
4. One of dads power tools could get frayed cords or
broken housing which could be dangerous
5. It would be dangerous if you had power points at
a babys level
Preventions
1. Make sure the tree is always
trimmed so it doesnt touch them
2. Take the deep fryer in if it rains
and always pack up after use
3. Carry the ladder horizontally so it
doesnt point up
4. Always check them before use
5. Put safety plugs in

1. Take a photo and show where you read your power consumption
2.Choose 2 items that you believe will make a big difference in electricity. Time
each object working for 3 minutes so you can identify which uses the most
power.
I did the clothes dryer and the oven.
The clothes dryer used more power in
three minutes
3. Try to identify which appliance in your house would use the
most power. Why do you think that?
3. I think the Clothes dryer because it goes for a long
time and always at a high level.
For my circuit I have constructed a Lego lamp. Unfortunately I
ran out of white pieces so I had to finish it with yellow.
What did they invent and why?
He invented the television commonly known as the TV. He invented this to provide
people with entertainment rather than their board games and to give them a method to
see events happening around the world.
How has their invention helped society?
It means people can find out about things that are happening around the world. It also
gives a form of entertainment either just watching TV or using a game console.
How has their invention affected your lifestyle?
It means I can watch movies on the weekends and play on my Wii when I want to. It also
means I can watch TV shows for entertainment.
What did they invent and why?
He invented lots of things like the light bulb, motion picture recording and sound
recording. He made these to provide an easier life for people and one with interesting
things.
How has their invention helped society?
The light bulb has helped society lots by lighting places up. The motion picture recorder
and sound recorder means you can take videos to show people and you can record
music too.
How has their invention affected your lifestyle?
It means I can take videos to show friends and family. The light bulb means I can actually
see during the night.
What did they invent and why?
He invented the first analogue computer which was a tide predicting device. This has led
to us having computers like the one I am using now. He invented it obviously to predict
the tide.
How has their invention helped society?
It has meant that people can find things out on the internet and people can email each
other.
How has their invention affected your lifestyle?
It has affected my lifestyle a lot like how when I get home I commonly play Minecraft and
it means I can present this project on a PowerPoint Presentation.
1. How does it work?
The toaster, a simple but commonly used appliance. This is used to cook your
toast for breakfast. The toaster I have uses electricity to heat some wires that
emit heat and therefore cook the bread.
2. What is the appliances role in your everyday life?
It makes toast for my breakfast each morning.
