WHAT IS PKU?
PKU (phenylketonuria),
in its "classic" form, is
a rare, inherited
metabolic disease that
results in mental
retardation and other
neurological problems
when treatment is not
started within the first
few weeks of life. .
PHENYLALANINE
PKU is characterized
by the inability of the
body to utilize the
essential amino acid
phenylalanine.
ENZYMATIC ACTIVITY
LEVELS OF BLOOD
PHENYLALANINE
In cases of PKU, levels may range from 680mg/dl, but are usually greater than
30mg/dl.
PKU is inherited as
an autosomal
recessive trait.
INCIDENCE OF PKU
NutraSweet in
particular, should be
avoided because it is
a derivative of
phenylalanine.
