Introduction
In this work we hope to explain the reasons why people
choose to work abroad. We also want to show you the
best countries to work in and why. We based this
investigation on criteria such as the quality of life, health
and the average life expectancy. Which countries give
us the best chances to have a good future? Which are
the most prepared countries to deal with an uncertain
future? Those are some questions that we intend to
answer with this work.

Portugals current situation

Portugals current economic conditions are bad.
Because of this poor economic condition and of the
crisis, Portugal became one of the countries with the
highest unemployment rate in Europe
Portugal started feeling this economic crisis in 2008.
Some economists predict that it will take about 2 years
for Portugal to be back on its feet and have a better
economic development.

Portugals current situation

Many Portuguese people emigrate; they are looking for
employment and better living conditions elsewhere,
especially newly-graduates, because even those who
end their courses find it difficult to find a job in Portugal.
They are often forced to work out of their courses and
work on something that they have not studied for.
That is the current economic and professional situation
in Portugal. We expect it to be in much better conditions
in few years, and that our problems are solved or at
least reduced.

Should we work abroad?

Unfortunately, Portugal has one of the highest
unemployment rates in Europe.
We have a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of
fifteen thousand dollars, which is low comparing with
other European countries, and its still decreasing year
after year.

Should we work abroad?

There is a lack of opportunities for some qualified jobs.
Many newly-graduates find it very difficult to find a job in
Portugal.
Even people with experience and an established
position in a company get fired everyday.
Most Portuguese salaries are low.

Should we work abroad?

We like to live big, but we dont have the economic
power that it takes for this expensive lifestyle.

Should we work abroad?

Our IRS can go up to 46.5%. Some countries, like
Denmark or Sweden, also have high taxes, but they
have advantages:
Free kindergartens for every child.
School is completely free.
The state helps young adults rent houses, so that they
can move out of their parents houses.
Every senior has the right to be at a nursing home for
free.

Should we work abroad?

In many countries, big companies give their employees
many advantages, like an iPhone for everyone, free
gym and spa for all of their employees, but, in Portugal,
this is very rare. Of course this is not a government
measure, but its a reflex of our economic situation.
In Portugal we pay the same taxes but dont have the
same rights. Many of our subsidies are being cancelled,
we lost the thirteenth salary, and our pensions are
getting lower and lower.

Should we work abroad?

By analysing all these facts, we can see that working
abroad is the best option we can make, but we
understand that some people dont like to leave their
country and families.

Countries with the best job offers

What is for you a

country with a good
job offer?

st

Is one of the richest countries in the world;

Is the second best country in security;
The average salary of a Norwegian is 31459
dollars per year;
Generous educational programs.

2 Denmark
nd

The average salary of a Danish is 24580 dollars

per year;
Denmark, has a very flexible labour market
thanks to the unique Danish flexicurity model;
Denmark has very high levels of social equality.

3 Switzerland
rd

Was considered the best country to be born in

2013;
The average salary of a Swiss is 30000 dollars;
Has a high average life expectancy of 83 years;
Zurich and Geneva were classified as the second
and third best cities in the world considering
quality of life.

Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical Engineering

The biomedical engineering course

was created to train professionals
to work with medical equipment.
Biomedical engineering is a field
that incorporates many areas of
sciences, such as physics and
mathematics, among others.

Biomedical Engineering

This area of expertise has been developed in our

country, because many educational institutions
offer the course in biomedical engineering as a
masters degree.

Biomedical Engineering
A biomedical
engineer:
designs the
structure;
develops and
assembles the
equipment;
calibrate and
measure electromedical equipment;
create software and
electronics that
optimize the use of
the machines;

A Biomedical engineer can work:

In hospitals;
In health centres;
In pharmaceutical and clinical laboratories;
In universities doing research;

Nowadays,

large multi-nationals, like

Toshiba, Philips and Siemens, are
betting on training and development
of top professional biomedical
engineers, offering employment in
research or providing services in a
hospital setting.

Portuguese students that graduate in computer

engineering search for work in other countries,
such as Japan, the USA, Israel and the UK.
Portugal is improving in technology but still cant
compare with these countries. This lack of
technology development leads computer
engineers to search for work abroad.

3rd perspective, Medical Doctor

Until recently, most new medical doctors would have a
job in the National Health System, but that is not
guaranteed for current and future generations.
Public hospitals and health centres have considerable
heterogeneity in conditions, from top quality services in
some medical areas to below average ones.
Salaries are considerably low and are most of the time
complemented by overtime work, and also by working in
the private sector.
Organization and coordination between institutions is
sometimes the worst aspect of public hospitals and
health centres.

The UK, Germany and the USA are probably the top
preferred destinies, mostly due to high levels of organization.
Payments in public or private sectors are also usually much
higher than in Portugal.
Moreover those countries are much more prepared to
provide the medical doctors with the tools to dedicate a
proportion of their time to quality investigation (clinical or
basic).

4th perspective, Psychologist

Psychology is, in our view, still under development,
since there is still much to discover about the way our
brains work, and we find out new techniques and
treatments everyday.
Many young people are starting to raise their interest
towards this science; we can see that by the increased
number of candidates for this course.

In Portugal, we have many psychologists, the market is

already full of them, so young people doing their
psychology course now will probably need to emigrate
and search for work elsewhere, since in Portugal there
s not enough demand for psychologists.

Conclusion
To work in Portugal or abroad is an ambiguous
question, because it depends on the area in which we
are working, since some work may be more valued
abroad where it is possible to find better conditions and
some work is already good in Portugal.
Despite the Portuguese economy, we should always
invest in our training, in particular, in something that
gives us pleasure to do, because we dont know how
the job market will be in a few years, even if Its bad in
Portugal, there is always the option to emigrate to a
country with better conditions. It is important not to give
up on our dreams, so that we can feel fully fulfilled.
To be successful, the first thing to do is to fall in love
with your work.
